Have a 2006 Jeep TJ Rubicon. Was running perfectly fine until I went to drive to work and wouldnt turn over. Thought maybe I was an idiot and left headlights on but noticed all electrical stuff (lights and radio) were functional. Was getting 12.5 V at battery so dont think thats the issue. Replaced starter, no luck. Checked starter voltage and it was getting about 12.7 V. Replaced ignition switch and ignition switch actuator and still didnt work. Any ideas? Would like to get it done soon without taking to dealer to figure out.

I had an issue like that once and it turned out to be a bad fuse under the hood. I dont recall which one but it was one of the smaller fuses.

Just got back from work. Replaced starter relay and fuses 6, 9, 13, and 22 under hood. No luck. And no I have not tested the ignition switch

Do the gauges move at all when you insert key and turn? if not check you ASD ( automatic shutdown) fuse I think its a 20 amp. Its located in the main fuse bank under hood I dont what the location is just follow the legend. I didnt get any movement on my gauges at all. I check wire harnesses and was almost thinking it was the PCM. I decided to check every fuse one by one and found it changed it and as soon as I turned the key and gauges moved I knew I found the problem. Good Luck.

In case it helps, I have a SuperChips Trail Dash 2 and when I turn my ley into the On position it doesn't even sense that its there.

I just had a similar issue that is now resolved.

- Relay and fuses were good.
- Battery terminals were tight and clean.
- Battery had 12.72 VDC resting

—> Found the signal wire to the starter fried at the end so I spliced in a good wire. Also cleaned up that terminal which you might want to look at to ensure muck isn’t causing high resistance and preventing the start signal from doing its job (u can also pull it and do a voltage check and/or resistance check).

I also wired in a new plug to my multi function switch (turn signal switch) since it was melted and exposing two pins.

I also changed the ignition switch and multi function switch when replacing the plug since I had already purchased them and figured it would be a good idea to do since being stranded is no fun.

I’m good to go now, but feel free to DM me if you’d like to discuss what I did (or my reasoning) in more detail.

Do you have pics by chance?

Note: the ignition switch is pictured on the left of the steering (yellowish part).

If you know your battery/connections are good and relay/fuses are good then id probably check the signal wire on the starter to ensure u are getting power to the starter.

Fwiw, my starter actuator was good and I believe the way to know it’s fine is that you have a spring/tension feel when going from run to start with the key. A dead-feel that others have described would point to the actuator. I checked mine even though I had tension, which confirmed it was good.

The old school way of smacking the starter with a hammer has worked for me as a temp fit in the past with a stuck starter solenoid (which has not been confirmed to be your issue).

I wanted to properly review things and found my answer before getting to that level of caveman maintenance.

My plug is fine. Went to try screwdriver to jump starter trick. Starter worked but didnt turn over. Sounded like it wasnt engaging engine.

Well I finally got it. No clue what I did though. After trying to jump starter I noticed the gauges inside were working and I was able to check for diagnostic codes (there were not any). Went back to room thinking I was so close but still not there. Then remembered I forgot to slide the black wire back on starter. Went and did that and she fired right up. Starter sounds a lil weird but probably just cuz I got the cheapest one AutoZone had in stock. I'm thinking when I put the new starter in I probably just had the push clip in the "pretty much on there but just not quite" zone so it looked and felt fine but did not work. Thank you all for the help and advice. No heart attack quite like car trouble a couple days into new job.
