I've been having some real issues with this pinion gear- first I had to fight to get the inner pinion bearing on, now I really have to fight it to pull the yoke on and off and push the pinion out of the outer pinion bearing. I couldn't get the yoke off without a yoke puller (picture coming soon) and I was able to get the pinion to move out of the outer bearing by a tiny bit with 10 SOLID whacks with a dead blow hammer. I decided I was done risking damage to the bearing and got a little creative:
It presses off really easily, thank goodness. It'll be a lot of back and forth setting correct pinion preload and torque- I am not looking forward to that.

Got the news Tuesday night I'm heading up to the North Slope on Thursday morning for 2-3+ weeks for some work in Nuiqsut. I really wish I could get more than a few day's advance notice of being away from home for that long, but it is what it is.
I'll be behind on the jeep work a few weeks, but 3 * 84+ hour weeks is $$$. I can't be too upset.
I managed to find a bearing shop that stocks Loctite 680, I may try to get that done before I leave but I doubt anything more will happen on the jeep until late April.

Back from Nuiqsut. Got to drive this around for a while, it's a shame the tracks are 40k a set or I'd be looking at getting some!
Got the front axle all buttoned up and done- just need to put in the shafts/hub/brakes, and fill it with oil. I was really worried about the placement of the ARB bulkhead fitting- I'd heard that it's easy to have the UCA whack it. It was a bit difficult to run the air line into it but I'm happy with the placement.
For the first time in a few months, I had an axle back underneath the jeep, even it if is held in by just the control arms. Don't mind the steering box leak in the background...
I'm waiting to put the rear axle back in because 1) I need to replace the rear wheel bearings and 2) I need to do the SYE and it'll be way easier without the axle in the way.

I pulled off the belly pan (one of the bolts was missing) and was surprised to see half the transmission mount come with it. It had completely disintegrated.

I'm doing the SYE keeping half the transfer case in the jeep. My chain was pretty loose- I could push the chain into the case without too much force. A new chain should be here tomorrow. The case was in really good condition- no gunk in the filter, bearings look great, etc. The RTV holding the tail housing on was surprisingly strong, it took a lot of whacks with a dead blow and two pry bars to get the RTV to break loose.
I'm fighting with one of the output shaft snap rings now, my shitty snap ring pliers aren't going to cut it.

My 35x13.50x15 TSL SX2s finally arrived, shipped by Lynden from Interco in Louisiana. It took just under a month for them to get here. I'm getting them mounted and balanced today, it'll be great motivation to finish the SYE and axle stuff.

Uninflated they measured ~33.5in tall, 11in wide between the largest tread blocks, and 13.5 inches wide from outside sidewall to outside sidewall.
In preparation for the new SYE I also installed a rear trackbar tilt bracket from JKS. It didn't fit great, I had to whack it on with a hammer and pull it in with the bolts the rest of the way. It does sit flush now though.

Got to LOVE them SX tires. Even standing still they look tough as heck. Always been a favorite of mine. Look forward to seeing how you like them.
I'll definitely be doing a review thread or something at some point. I wish more people around here liked or ran Intercos, they're the gold standard in anything that isn't desert.
Yes the dislike for Interco is funny on a Jeep forum. There are more than one person in my club who run Interco tires.
I don't know that's it's dislike at much as fear/acknowledgement that they aren't good street tires. I think most people in this forum drive on the street as much (or more) as they drive off road. Bias ply intercos do not give the kind of street characteristics that are desired... Or so imagined. I've never run them, so I don't really know.
They do offer radial tires also. And IMO bias ply tires get a bad rep. Yes they don't last as long as radial tires but for what most people use them for I don't know many who expect 40K+ mileage anyhow.
I think perception is reality in this case... In other words, people have heard a lot of what I mentioned, so they don't try them. Those things might not be true, but people think it, so they don't try the tires. It's also an expensive gamble. I had a set of blems in my cart before I got my X3s. For the wheeling I do, in Michigan, they are probably a great tire. I just couldn't pull the trigger on them, because of the things meeting above... If true I would have hated them for 95 percent of the driving I do.
I'm old enough that I remember when radial tires became the norm and how everyone disliked them at first. Of course there were growing pains and the first ones offered weren't what they are now. And I can remember when MOST Jeepers wouldn't run a radial if you gave them a set. But that was a long time ago and some of the first off-road type radials had weak sidewalls. It's the other way around now.
I don't remember when I bought my first radial tire but I know it was after I'd joined the Army in 1978. My parents bought a set for their commuter car in 1976 I think.
I think this is the crux of it. Interco's aren't as visible or available as BFGs or Coopers- you can't just walk into Discount Tire and get a set.
Mine will be a trail jeep that I drive solely to and from the trailhead. We'll see how I like them. It'll be easy enough to pawn them off to someone who runs a trailered rig if I don't like them.
I want to see how much they flat spot on you since you're up in the Great White North
One of the things I don't like about at least the SX tires is they seem to run short of their advertised height. I had 38x12.5x16.5 and they measured out at 36.8" tall. II never really noticed mine flat spotting but it's been too long to and I just might not remember.

We're coming into summer now, it seldom gets below 20F at night. I'm sure that next winter it'll ride like this:
I seem to remember some summer nights where is didn't get down below 40* at night... Now when I lived in Barrow having a high of 50* was cause for celebration. .
