Can you replace your own windshield?

You can… but I bet your insurance will cover it at no cost.

Here in NC, I don’t believe insurance companies offer free windshield replacements for free. At least USAA doesn’t. I get free ding fixes..that’s it. Sucks as I’ve spent way too much money on windshield replacements

If you have comprehensive and/or collision insurance, then you are typically covered for $50. A quick search and yes, USAA covers auto glass, but does not state a price.

Collision likely increases cost of insurance or counts against you as a claim. I would not recommend. Comp will usually have a low deductible and have an allowance with no impact. In my case it's one windshield claim a year with no impact to coverage or cost of coverage. Deductible on my comp is 100.

I paid $180 for a windshield last year and they came to my house. I got a rock chip in it a month later. ☹️

On my TJ never, my wife’s Expedition, never misses a flying dam rock.
Gasoline? 🥺

I’m picturing you, that mask, and it in a gas can, now that’s a way to ruin a 5 gallon can.

Mr Mean tweets and cheap gas can’t get here fast enough, ha.

Yes they do cover auto glass, dings and chips are free to fix when claimed. I’ve had to replace my windshield through my insurance (USAA), I had to pay my deductible of $500, otherwise out of pocket would have been close to $800. My insurance did not go up.
If you know something I don’t about this $50 to cover a windshield through USAA, please let me know, lol.

Hell, give it a shot. I did glass for years at the dealer, it wasn't rocket science.
Is your 99 glue in or gasket?
The urethane is hard to cut out if you've never done it before, but easy to install. The gasket type is easy to remove, but a bit tricky to install.

I do not. That's just the standard for most insurance companies around here. I noticed USAA didn't post a fee amount online, but if they're making you pay your deductible for glass, then I think I know why.

I have done it on my own TJ. It’s not overly hard, but you need to be very detail oriented and do everything exactly as required…

By the time you buy the windshield, urethane, primer, seal and caulking gun you’re possibly priced over what it would cost to just have it done though…

My caulk gun is a 26:1 ratio. Makes dispensing the urethane a much easier task. A regular cheap caulk gun will make you wish you’d never started. Sometimes they even break under the stress…

Sounds like you don't have comp coverage or you made a collision claim. I pay a little extra each year to have comp coverage and it's definitely worth it.

Somehow I'd expect you should know that working at a dealer. But, all TJ windshields and hard top side glass are glue in.

No one has mentioned the pain in the ass T mold yet, I'm surprised.

So I had my FIRST day on the job (electrical work) today, (that is not working with my Dad), so thats all very exciting for me. But when I was loading up the ladder on the way home I accidentally tapped my windshield and cracked it pretty bad.

Am I able to replace it myself or do I need to get it done professionally?

Do you care what it looks like when you are done?
Are you going to find the Mopar 1 piece T mold or use the universal cut to length and then put up with the gap at the bottom when it shrinks?
Do you care if the inner reveal mold is fucked up?
Do you know enough to look across the glass before you buy it to make sure you aren't getting one that looks like a tribute to the Stars and Stripes?
Do you have a decent windshield knife?

TJ window is a flat piece of glass. If you pull the trim there are absolutely no tricks. You can do it no problem with a string, a new seal and half a brain. If you want to pay that's fine. This ain't a difficult deal, don't let the scared folks that haven't done it scare you.

I dont know who you are talking to but I have done them before and I speak from experience

Yes.
I'd try.
