@Chris and
@Katuhstrofik. In your thinking, what distinguishes a forum like this from Facebook. I’m not on Facebook, so I don’t have experience there, but there seems to be some commonalities. E.g. you make posts, you can like a post, can be addictive...
And does your wife or fiancé think you are addicted to the Jeep forum? How do they respond when you say get off Facebook, it’s destroying your life!
Oh man... having grown up on forums in the 90s and 2000s before "social media" even existed, I can say whole heartedly that a forum and Facebook aren't even remotely the same.
I mean technically speaking, anyone could get addicted to anything. Be it a forum, a drug, Facebook, etc. However, the weird thing is, for a while there I was addicted to Facebook. Constantly checking the phone, constantly logging in. With the forum, I don't do that. I mean I do login several times a day, but it's much more productive. I'm not doing it to see who liked my post (I have "Like" notifications turned off on this forum).
In addition to that, Facebook brings some sort of "social media drama" aspect along with it, and no one is immune to it. Go anywhere on Facebook, be it a group post, a post from a news outlet, etc. Read the comment section and prepare to get sucked in. It doesn't matter what ANYONE posts, someone will find something negative to say, and things will spiral out of control. This gets worse when the posts are political in nature.
It's also the whole liking of posts, sharing of posts, and the "social media mentality". I'm not sure I can put it into words, but go spend a year on Facebook and a year on this forum. Come back and tell me which one is more "pleasant" and which one is more "addicting".
My wife has never mentioned me being addicted to the forum. I'm never on it when we're out. For some reason it was having Facebook on my phone that was addicting. I don't know why, but it really does reprogram your mind. There's just sooooo much garbage on there. Even if you belong to what you believe to be the most well mannered Facebook group, it will constantly be littered with assholes (tons and tons of them), re-posts of the same meme and videos over-and-over, and generally useless b.s. and mindless reading.
I'm not trying to say everyone who uses Facebook is addicted. I do feel confident saying that of the modern generation, I'd be willing to bet 8 out of 10 of them are addicted to Facebook and have a problem with it that they just don't realize (i.e. not being able to put down their phone). I'm also not saying everything on there is garbage, but I've been on there long enough to realize that a good amount of it is just mindless, senseless b.s., good for nothing more than wasting your time (and life).
I also don't like what Facebook is trying to do with the internet (kill it essentially), but that's another story altogether.
