What's "off road"?

Was thinking about this today. What's "off road"?

Forest service roads? Skid roads? Two track?

I was wondering what others on here thought constituted going off road?

Lol, ya, that's true! We used to thrash out a VW bug on the skid roads in high school.

Different levels of "off road" IMO. Anything off pavement is off road in my book. After that, it's just different levels of difficulty.

Some of the gravel FSR's around here are a lot nicer than some of the paved roads in town. So off road is anything past where the pavement ends?

Yeah, our paved roads are in similar condition. Sometimes the dirt road is smoother. I have 1/4 mile of gravel road to travel just to get home.

This is so true. If you wouldn’t take your car down it, it’s considered off road to me.

In my youth it was a home made dune buggy with two wheels (total of 4) welded together for width and running wild across the high desert in Southern Calif. Today you would spend time behind bars for places we went then! No trails no roads no one else there!

I think there's more to it than road surface and potential body damage. If you call AAA and they laugh at you out loud, that's off road. If you actually have to use a map to navigate an unfamiliar area, that's off road. If you have to be self sufficient, that's off road. If there's an even money chance you're going to lift a tire, that's off road. If the road surface will trash a set of new street tires...

I think that anything off tamac is off road its just the grade of off road...just like trails are graded from easy to extreme.

With the new gas tax we are paying all the roads should be pristine very soon.
