Rubicon locker binding

As long as you aren't locking it in situations where a locker can get you into trouble. Remember, a locked differential in a slippery section will always find the low spot. Out here, on a snow covered shelf road, that can mean over the edge of a 1000 foot cliff.

Would I have to worry about rotating tires more often or keep it at my normal interval, 3100 miles.

No idea. My instinct would be more frequent rotations due to the lack of differential action.

Popped the cover this morning, found some shavings and a couple of small chunks of metal so those limited slip gears are definitely in the process of breaking down. If anyone has locker parts I'd love to purchase some limited slip gears lol

Those are now mostly made of unobtanium, in other words they're getting nearly impossible to find. If push goes to shove I'd consider replacing it with the electric Eaton E-Locker.

Did the search and came here.
I remember @mrblaine and others discussing when and why to lock the rear to minimize wear on the factory Rubicon LSD, it being the weak link.
Not for me, I've heeded the advice but have a couple buddies who're no buying my word on it. Last effort on my part would be explanation from the forums.
After that if they continue to brag "I haven't even been in 4wd today" (no locker switch mod either) and won't listen then I'll just wait for the told you so moment.

So, looking for a clear explanation for dummies.

Anytime anyone applies throttle to the to the rear diff, stress is placed on the LSD when the diff is unlocked. This includes powering around corners at a stop light. Eventually, this alone will break the LSD.

Turns out one of my buddies is waiting on the local dealership to get him a new actuator (06). Unobtainium I hear, for a few years now. Discontinued per Parts Giant.
Ya, he's one that always says "I haven't even been in 4wd yet". Dunno if the actuator is part of what fails with improper/over use of the LSD?

I suggested he look at ARB or OX for a rear locker but he's asking if a newer JK Rubicon e-locker can be made to work? "Swapping tubes"??
I'm not seeing it but throwing it out there.

Best option?

Thanks.

The JK Rubicon lockers are electric. And the OX locker is fat.

He'd be better off with an Eaton E-Locker or ARB Air Locker than the JK Rubicon electric or Ox lockers.

I can't imagine how the actuator could go bad from spinning the LSD unless broken LSD pieces somehow punctured its air bladder.

Know the electric part. He's thinking the full swap. Wouldn't that require housing change also?

Ox Fat? As in too big? Fitment issues?

I'm suggesting ARB, love them in the XJ and would go that route in the LJ if needed.

I'll get more details about who diagnosed and what they're seeing, how they determined the actuator is bad...
He's a take it to the dealership guy, even when we offer to wrench with him.

I can't think of anyone who has put a JKR locker into a TJ Dana 44. I don't know if it can or can't.

The OX has a gigantic diff cover. Many get away with it. But at least on mine the way I have it set up, I wouldn't be able to fit it. And I think the cable actuator is a bulky and silly solution to a made up problem.
