Triple A and when did they get so very terrible?

I need to send one of my rigs to the gear shop, I have Premiere RV with AAA and have been a member for 20 years. I call in for the tow at 8:48 am yesterday. Get the info to them correctly, they tell me it will be 45 minutes. Great.

I call back in at 10 and ask where the driver is. I get told that they are running behind and it will be another hour.

I call back at 12:30 pm and this time I'm a bit grumpy. Where is my driver and when did ya'll get to be so very bad at what you are supposed to be good at? I understand she says and we apologize. Lady, I don't want an apology, I want what I paid for. What is the problem? Hold on while I check. She gets back on the line and this time she must have thought changing the units would calm me down. They are 60 minutes out she says. Ma'am, I know that 60 minutes is another hour and ya'll are really messed up. She really doesn't sound like she cares, she just wants me off the phone and is mumbling bullshit platitudes to get me to go away. She even asks if I want to cancel the tow.

NO! I don't want to cancel but here is what I do want. I want the very next time your family is broken down on the side of the road out in the middle of nowhere and they call AAA, that they get the exact same treatment that I'm getting and then maybe you'll understand but I really doubt it.

At 3:15, the truck finally shows up and the driver gives even less of a shit than she did and since I was a bit leery of them not taking the job, I had to be a tad more civil than I felt.

I did come up with a plausible explanation. I highly suspect that with fuel and inflation costs adding to what a tow runs now, AAA has not renegotiated their rates to be commensurate with today's prices and their calls are being backburnered for more lucrative business. Nothing else really explains it.

I have been a member for 30 plus year. I have used them 3 times once about 20 years ago motorhome and quad trailer coming from glamis. Motorhome died right when I got off the 91 freeway about 3 miles from my house. Tow truck shows up in less than half and hour. I wanted him to pull me across the intersection so I could disconnect the trailer. He towed both all the way to my house. Great service. Next was a a year ago half an hour out of Vegas transmission went out on the truck. 5-6 hours in 100 degree heat. The last time running cleghorn the only time without a spare I puncture a sidewall. I put multiple plugs in it (7 ) and get down to the 15 and the plugs spit out. Called AAA they told me 5 hours also. Sent my buddy to a tire shop I had called he got back we installed the tire I set it on the ground and noticed it was a 33 not a 35 traffic was backing up so I decided to head home vs backtracking to deal with the tire situation. I think I would cancel AAA if they didn’t have dmv service and my insurance is through them. The roadside assistance has gone to shit. The last two time I was in major metropolitan areas not out in the sticks.

Do I get Napa discounts?

10% after entering your AAA number. The NAPA sales are usually as good or better.

I've been a member for 5 or 6 years. I haven't had to deal with them on any roadside assistance, but my way of justifying the expense is it keeps me from having to go into the DMV offices. I've bought and sold quite a few vehicles since I got the membership and every time to the AAA office has been super quick and easy.

AAA as DMV is VERY nice - but they don't do that in Florida like they did in California.

I have had AAA for more years than I can count and have used them a handful of times.

Cliff Notes:
AAA phone person wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. Dispatch and the driver ultimately got it done. It took longer than it should have, but wasn't a horrible wait. Driver was miserable. Cost me $0.

Last month I needed to flatbed the TJ.. only had to go about six miles, but It was a necessity. The call went smooth and within ten minutes I got a call from the driver that he was ten minutes out and was happy to help. As we are confirming the address we both realize the phone gal made a mistake and as it turned out, my true location was out of this drivers territory.

Call back to AAA and get the same gal. She dispatches arranges for another truck. This driver also gets back to me right away, but he is an hour out. Fast forward an hour and I check on status.. still in transit to me, and... he has the wrong location as well. Iron that out and about forty minutes he arrives.

This kid turns out to be the most pissed off person I have met in a long time. He is not happy with anything about the job of transporting my TJ and has no issue letting know.. it's too cold, he doesn't like the angle of attack he has, it's going to be a hard job, it's cold, his winch doesn't work, he wishes someone else got the job... on and on.

Long story longer... he manages to get the truck up on the bed, does the six mile drive and drops it right where I asked him to at the shop and leaves.

I have RV Premiere too. It has many years since I used AAA for roadside. It was good then.

Does AAA have any real competition? I suspect they have grown fat and lazy.

I tried last year to use them to book hotel. I found the process so frustrating I booked all the hotels directly myself. It sucked big time trying to use AAA.

I posted this thread on Twitter. Let's see what happens. Doing that used to help me with American Airlines.

Given everything I experienced, I don't think they care one tiny bit. At no point can a company fail so miserably at the one thing they are supposed to be good at and still care, that is just not a reasonable conclusion. They do emergency roadside assistance. Exactly zero about what they did says they understand any of that and it does not matter one bit if they don't.

The others in here with very similar experiences show that this is not an isolated incident.

I have a "Plus" membership since 2015 (about when I started venturing out farther and farther for the summer time trips), but I haven't had to use their services so far. Reading the experiences here makes me wonder if it is really worth it. I have used the roadside assistance from my regular insurance (Progressive) one time for my old Mazda. The alternator went out and I needed a 2 mile tow from my work parking lot to the local shop and it took 3-4 hours for them to send someone with a tow truck. If I were stranded elsewhere, it wouldn't have been fun. If AAA is just the same way now .. what is the point?

What the hell does TWITter have to do with this?

Many organization pay attention when tagged in a tweet. But, judging by your avoidance of all things internet, I am sure you are reluctant to think so. And they may not pay attention. I am sure it is more effective than post on a Jeep forum alone.

Like I said, I don't think they have any competition and are now making money with a diminishing level of service.

I don't think they care either. Ironically they are making even more money than ever

AAA AUTO revenue is $719.4M annually. After extensive research and analysis, Zippia's data science team found the following key financial metrics.

  • AAA AUTO has 2,595 employees, and the revenue per employee ratio is $277,212.
  • AAA AUTO peak revenue was $719.4M in 2021.

I don't "avoid all things internet", I just skip the bullshit (of which there's plenty).

I have never used AAA but have road side assistance through State Farm, it runs about $24.00 per year per vehicle if you choose the option. Would this be an option to AAA? I have no idea how much AAA runs a year.
