Throttle position sensor (TPS) went bad, now what?

Hey guys,

My 1998 Jeep Tj 4.0 started acting erratic and had inconsistent power (Felt like it wanted to stall when in gear. Low RPMs & High). Drove it to my house thinking it was a bad fuel pump but just when I got around the corner my engine light came on. Drove it a bit more and realized it wasn't a fuel supply issue. So I plugged it in to the computer at AutoZone and came back with a bad throttle position sensor. The symptoms are right on for a bad TPS. So now im left with the problem we all have and that is to find MOPAR parts which in this case I have had no luck. Im afraid of going with any aftermarket stuff since every review I read says it just gave them more issue later down the line whether it be failure or just more inconsistencies while driving. So my question is 1. Is there any supply of mopar TPS? & 2. If not, what is the best substitute for a mopar TPS?

BTW, I see a ton of MOPAR TPS out there but only for 2002-2006. I guess for all you with jeeps within this year range, maybe its time to stock up before you are where I am. #68404428AA

When my 99 4.0 TPS crapped out in 2010 , I replaced it with one from NAPA. Still works fine.

Mopar 4874371AC Throttle Position Sensor

This worked on my '97 and has been fine since I bought it two and a half years ago. Looked legit to me.

Thanks for the help! Looked at the reviews and although some are very good, the ones with pictures show its not a genuine MOPAR part.

"1. The Red O ring only goes around the throttle shaft and not inside with the 6 rectangular slots like the OEM Mopar.2. Bolt hole sleeves are Silver and not brass colored like the OEM Mopar.3. Bolts are silver with Red loctite rather than black with yellow loctite like the oem Mopar.4. Part # on part is screen printed instead of engraved like the oem Mopar."

Sad so many sellers are out there trying to disguise chinese junk as OEM and just hope us the consumer overlook the part we actually get.

Update: I went on ebay and found 1 from a seller that says they are selling an OEM product and they have good reviews as well as a good return policy in case its chinese junk. We'll see what shows up but at least I have the characteristics of the OEM one to go off of. If its legit, I'll post the seller here in case another comes available. Dont want to give them any publicity just yet. The part number for 98-01 is #04874371AC

Be wary. Many cheap replacements say OEM replacement which just means it was designed to replace the OEM, not that it is the OEM brand.

Yea and now some are even more shameless and just outright lie saying its an OEM part when its not. So keeping my fingers crossed that im able to get a genuine mopar part. Parts are just getting harder to get a hold of for us 01 and below folk.

I saw they have the #68433984AA in stock. Now they look identical to me and in some places it reads that 68433984AA has been superseded by 4874371AC. Not sure about the validity of that and also does that mean the #68433984AA should work just the same? Thanks

Edit: I might have that backwards. The #68433984AA might supersede the #4874371AC.

Heres the answer the my own question. The #68433984AA DOES replace/supersede the #4874371AC. Here it is directly from MOPAR. https://store.mopar.com/oem-parts/mopar-throttle-position-sensor-68433984aa In the listing you will see it states that it replaces #4874371AC. That clears that up and also makes this part a lot easier to find as #68433984AA is much more readily available. Thanks for all your help

The 04874371AC is listed as the proper part for my 1998 per the MOPAR parts list I have but it has been replaced by the 68433984AA

All aftermarket sensors are a gamble- they are not all bad. But they aren’t all good either.

Recently replaced mine with a mopar oem. The one that was on my Jeep read good on the multimeter but I had some jerkiness especially when letting off the throttle going down a hill. It was not an oem tps. The mopar really smoothed out my Jeep.

Hey guys, I have an update. So before I was made aware that Rockauto sold these I came across an ebay seller that stated they sold only OEM parts and had ordered one through there. Thankfully I came across a review from one on amazon that helped differentiate the fakes from the real ones.

Well what do you know, they sent me a chinese knock off in a resealed MOPAR bag. Part number is printed not engraved, not even the correct part #.

I will re-order through rockauto now but just thought id share with you all. Double check your replacement parts and make sure you are getting what you are paying for.

And the seller has been around since 1999 selling "MOPAR" parts. Heres the seller: FloccosTradingPost. My suggestion is to stay away from any MOPAR parts this guys sells.

Not sure what you were expecting here but this looks 100% authentic. Parts and suppliers do change over time do whatever o ring and engraving you were hoping for I seriously doubt exists anymore.

Wasn’t hoping for a box but rather a bag that didn’t look ripped open and resealed. If you like at the top, there are stickers that looked ripped. And also the part number doesn’t match. It’s just giving off some red flags

Last update: I have to admit when I’m wrong and I was wrong. This indeed is the 68433984AA. It’s tough because there are no pictures of what this part looks like because they all just show a picture of the 4874371AC. But yes this new part is the new OEM part. Part number is not printed on these anymore and O-ring style is very different now. Just wanted to come on an clear the record that the part I posted is actually OEM and share what this part actually looks like now. Thanks for the help from all of you
