I should probably replace my head unit at some point with bluetooth. In my car I like to be able to listen to the music on my phone and charge it at the same time.
Anyone using the Polk Audio MM series 652? https://www.crutchfield.com/p_107MM652/Polk-Audio-MM-652.html?tp=78072 They are $100 more than the DB 652 https://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DB652/Polk-Audio-DB-652.html?tp=78072 My power will be 45 watts RMS per channel and I probably won't have a sub. If the MM 652 will sound better I won't hesitate to buy them. The sensitivity is a tad higher (1 point).
One is marine grade which could account for the price increase. Do you need marine grade? If not, the JBL and Infinity are on a good sale.
actually they are both marine rated, but no, I don't need them to be
From the specs alone, the sound quality difference will not be discernible.
I would really recommend a subwoofer. I know you aren’t looking to boom boom, but your music will just sound like ting-ting-ting without one. The four small speakers can’t reproduce the notes in the artists songs. In other words, you’re not hearing the song the artist wrote. Building a good audio system isn’t necessarily hard or expensive, but you do need speakers and amps to get good clean sound and hear all the notes in balance.
After I get everything installed if I'm not happy with it I'll look into a sub. I don't want to take up floor space so it will probably have to go in the console which is huge but I don't really put much in it.
The sound bar can take all 6.5" speakers?
The alternatives shown in your manual would work, but they would decrease your overall volume pretty substantially.I know very little about sub woofers. If my head unit has 45 watts RMS X 4 and a sub woofer output would I use a unpowered subwoofer or a powered one?

What most people do is a powered sub & use the RCA subwoofer jacks on the head unit to run a signal to it.
Thought this update might interest a member or two. I ended up removing the 4" JL Audio dash speakers and installing a pair of Polk 5-1/2" DB522. I bought Boom Mat backers but the wrong size was shipped so I didn't install them.Hello, everyone. I am new to the forum after having purchased my '99 TJ from a friend last Friday! One of the first upgrades I am considering is the sound system, so I did peruse all 53+ pages of this thread...
My TJ has the two dash speakers which appear stock, and the sound bar which a previous owner replaced with JL Audio speakers, and a Pioneer head unit which a previous owner installed. There are no speakers in the rear. The sound is pretty bad (not loud, not clear, and I have to fade the volume to the front at a level of about 7/10 or 8/10 to get a fairly balanced sound); the speakers do not sound blown.
My question is this: where would you start for an upgrade? What I'd like to do is:
1. Keep the Pioneer head unit
2. Keep the JL Audio speakers in the soundbar
3. Replace the front dash speakers, maybe with Kicker 46CSC464 6x9s
4. In the future, add a sub
Excited to hear your thoughts!

I did a rough test by measuring dB(A) with a simple iPhone app in the four seating locations with three audio types (podcast, rock, and rap) using the same songs and the same parts of the songs for each test instance. It's not perfect, but it did show marginally higher levels of dB(A) with one and then both speakers replaced.
One other takeaway - I used to have to fade to the front +7 to get the sound balanced comfortably between dash and soundbar, now only need to fade +3.
My next steps, I think, are going to be to buy this sub package (just looking for something inexpensive, simple, and all-inclusive to fill up the sound): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079PSSD6N/?tag=wranglerorg-20
I may also try to get the properly sized Boom Mats since it seems like a simple bonus for $10-15.

Wow. This is impressive. Good job!
I wish someone woukd do this with a JKU. I had those speakers in my TJ. And they improved things ALOT over stock.
What app did you use?
Again. Great job!

I steered away from the expensive headache machine. Would be fun if your rig is meant for partying in a place like Dumont/Pismo, Lake Havasu, or Jerry’s Florida mud run events; otherwise, I don’t see it as an upgrade.
