Is this normal behavior for new Rancho RS5000X shocks?

And when you say they both operated the same way later on, you mean they operated correctly, like the first shock in my video?

wouldn't the springs in your tj return the shocks to ride height ? I was thinking the shocks would be designed to work in connection with the spring not just by pushing it down by hand.

Right, no shocks (that I know of) are designed to push the TJ back up to ride height. And yes, the springs are strong enough to overcome the friction that was stopping one of my shocks from extending on its own. But since only one of my two was extending on its own, I figured something was wrong.

Why would two shocks of the same make/model, built to the same specs, both primed in the same way, perform differently? Even though they are out of the car shouldn't they do the exact same thing within some defined manufacturing tolerance?

What myself and others have seen is that the performance of the Rancho shocks out of the vehicle varies significantly. It could be the manufacuring tolerance is large or it could be they have poor quality control. Asking the Rancho tech support is like pulling teeth - they took 10 days just to answer an email from me, so that gives me the impression they don't really care.

I told Rancho tech support that their distributor that I purchased from said this:

To be fair, you did select the cheapest, lowest quality shocks that Rancho offers...The RS5000X shocks are their worst quality shocks they make

and they didn't care about that either - didn't even try to defend their product. So why should I or anyone else bother defending them if they don't?

They are the 0"–2" model, and he had a 2.5" lift.
