You I also ordered 2 sets of 522's on Saturday. Was going to wait a month or two on this...but with the sale, I couldn't wait (how's that for justification?)

I think those sound pods can only accept 5.25". The old soundbar like was on my first TJ could accept 6.5" but I don't think the sound pods that came along in 2003 can accept anything that big.

When comparing these two sets of speakers I would go for the 6.5".
You should be able to get the 6.5" speaker in the overhead pods. The mounting depth is less than a 3mm increase but since the speaker's diameter increased, you will not be able to use the location where the stock mounting screws go, instead you need to move them a little outwards towards the perimeter. Attached is the spec sheet for the two speakers so you can measure fitment.
To quote a very wise Jeep enthusiast about 6.5" Polk DBs going into a 03-06 sound pod:
"The screw holes don't match up since you're talking two different diameter speakers. But the mounting screws are self-tapping so they screw right into the surrounding area without problem. You of course must use the Polk speaker grill, the OE grill will not fit."
my 522 came in today, 1 day ship in a snow storm, installed and finally my system is complete for now.....not bad for an entire system including new sub amp and sub, all speakers and a head unit all for around $250
Mine will be delivered on Thursday. Same for me, new head unit and four new dB polk 522s for just under $250. I can’t wait to swap themselves out this weekend.
I got the JVC-KD-X35MBS. I got the radio first about a little over a month ago. I like the marine grade radios because 1) they are weather resistant so if I get caught in a rain event without a top the radio will be fine and 2) marine radios have a white background with black lettering which make it very easy to read the display when my top is off the jeep and the sun is shining. Black background with colored lettering are tough to read with sun glare.

Really like that head unit. I just replaced the dash and sound bar speakers with 4 Polk DB 522. I've got an older Sony CD player. Not sure the specs but how much difference would this head unit make in sound with the new speakers?
Very subjective as the user needs to control this, and the speaker set-up also plays a role. Sound processing within the head unit is a critical role in sound quality, like bass and treble, as well as the equalizer and high/low pass filters. Coaxial speakers give the user less control, like a track bar relocation bracket, where component speakers give the user more control, like an adjustable track bar. I assume you have coaxial?
Back to original question. Probably very little but depends on a few factors as mentioned above.
How do you listen to your music? You have a Sony CD player so I assume you listen to CDs, like me. UpperMIs JVC marine grade does not play CDs. So do you listen to CDs, stream, radio and/or? Do you need a USB input, or two, or none? HD Radio is more common now, so if you listen to radio then you may want a head unit with a built-in HD radio tuner.
My brands of choice are Kenwood, JVC, Alpine and Pioneer. Kenwood has great built-in sound processing controls, and Alpine has an App, TuneIt, and you can control the sound processing through the App, and you can download another user App to see what you like.
For my overhead speaker pods, I installed component speakers with a crossover , but plan to remove the crossover and then add an amplifier/DSP combo to power and control the signals to those speakers.
Audio is fun!!! Jeeps are way more fun though!!!!!!

The unit in the Jeep was there when I bought it. Rarely listen to CD's. I currently use a bluetooth connection to stream music via Spotify.. If there was a USB input I'd use that over bluetooth.
If replacing the HU wouldn't improve the sound quality substantially with the new speakers (which by the way kick ass) then I probably won't do it. I really don't want to add an amp if I don't have too...
Amplifier adds power (loudness)
DSP (digital sound processor) controls the sound quality
Head units have built in DSPs so you do not need one, nor an amp, unless you need more power.
If you stream and use a USB, then you should look into this one. Chris just purchased one so you can ask him how he likes it. Great price to pay for streaming and you get a lot of controls to play with to optimize sound. Also compare with Alpine CDE line up, like the 143BT.

3 day shipping. Impressive! If anyone needs some speaker adapter plates for the dash speakers to convert to a 5.25" speaker, I have a pair you can have. I already have the adapters, and Crutchfield sent the adapter plates along with the factory pigtail adapters along with the speakers. Also impressive!
