3.07 to 4.88 re-gear question

I’d stick with the 4.88s personally. 4.88 and 33’s is awesome on the 5 speed and still decent if changing to 35’s later.
Oh yea. I’m just ready to have my 5th gear back, and eventually with the 35s I think it will still perform optimally for the style of wheeling I like to do. I’m not bouncing on rocks or anything like that. My wife and I both enjoy cruising on trails, and at rare times I like to get a little squirly.

Same here. Or the $$$ either. I will say my 35's have been more than big enough for my uses. :)
Just an unrelated question real quick since I have ya;

I was looking online at some 27 and 30 splines shafts for the rear for when I want to get something more robust. They should, in theory, still fit in the axle even with a little bit bigger diameter, right ?

30 spline shafts are super shafts. 27 spline are stock. If you're not doing the super 35, then you need to get a 27 spline carrier which will fit your existing stock shafts. If you are doing the super 35, you need to get a super 35 locker which is 30 spline and will accept the 30 spline super shafts. You can not mix and match different spline axle shafts and carriers. That is exactly why the S35 requires a locker, because nobody makes a 30 spline carrier or spider gears for the larger shafts. The 30 spline shafts are larger than the 27s and of course due to the splines themselves will only work with the splined carrier meant for them.

Yes, you need 30 spline axle shafts that have a 1541H rating. Avoid any rear shafts with a 4340 or similar 43xx rating. 1541H axle shafts are what come in good Super 35 kits like from Revolution Gear & Axle. Not until you get to 1541H 30 spline shafts in the rear will you be good to run 35" tires and a locker.

Sounds like you’ve done your research. Those are all benefits of a proper regear.

If you’re doing light trail riding your Dana 35 will be ok. If you start getting into heavier stuff where you’re hammering the rear or need a locker, new axle shafts will be a must.

Jerry is right in you needing new carriers.

i’m running 33s, i’m about to re gear both axles to 4.88s and run a locker out front with new diff carriers + 27 spline Super dana 35 rear axles am i good to go?

Are you running a locker in the rear?

no lockers for rear

Then you may get by with it with 33s. A locker is generally the death nell for the 35. Just make sure you get the proper alloy shafts for the 35.

There is no such thing as "super Dana 35" 27 spline axles. There used to be a c-clip eliminator kit in 27 spline that had 4340 shafts, but that was long ago and they haven't been a thing in a long time. A Super 35 upgrade these days requires a 30-spline Dana 35 locker and upgrades the shafts to 30-spline 1541H steel.

If you are not installing a 30-spline locker in the rear, then you are not installing a Super 35. There are still some upgrade shafts for 27-spline, and they are 1541H, and slightly stronger than stock. You can get by with those or even stock shafts on 33's if you take it easy and don't install a locker. Might want to consider at least upgrading the spider gears to the net forged type by Spicer which are a bit stronger than stock and don't chip away like the stock spiders do. Those would hold up better on 33's, and spiders are usually the weakest link.

This is an old post but triggered a question, if my jeep came with 3.73's on Dana 30/44, do I need a new carrier to fit 4.88?
