4” fog light options?

Those are a blast from the past! Thanks for the link. Checks price point and a true fog lamp! Mentally I was looking round but I will make a mock-up and see how it flows with the every… could be a contender! Bonus part with the 100w bulb it will keep the snow/ice cleared off.

If you look at my avatar, those are Hella 550s, larger lights but the same profile. They look okay, and since yours would be a little more outboard, under the rectangular parking lights, they should look good.

Nothing helps when the fog is heavy enough. I drove nights for 33 years and had fog so thick you couldn't see 10' ahead of you. I bought fog lights for my work vehicle. Still couldn't see, but the yellow looked cool.

How about a set of Hella 450s? They're just under 4" high and have a good pattern. This kit has everything you need, but seems to only be available in clear. You can get the individual lights with an amber lense if you have everything else you need, or you could get yellow bulbs for them.

I have these yellow bulbs in my oem fog lights. They work great in the fog.

Its not monumental vision improvement heavy fog… but if I can get another 10 feet, see the frost line AND look cool…or even just look 😎

Here’s an option for yellow lens Hellas that are kind of small that I used for a few years and really liked the looks of but I felt like they needed work before installing them. They come from India though, so it took a while to arrive. They worked well in fog but I ended up wanting something different.

Some info on having them on my Jeep. The 2 biggest things to me was the thin paint job and the gaping hole in the back the wiring went through. I sprayed a couple coats of paint on them and even though there was a rubber grommet, there was still about 1/4” of a hole where the wiring went through it. I filled it with RTV. They never had water or moisture inside them.

Been running a set of 3” Diode Dynamic sport pods SAE fog lamps. They make a ton of light and have a great cutoff.
The lights are their lower tier and still provide amazing light output. Would buy them again.

How about doing something with the ones you currently have?

Maybe you could find a yellow cover. Maybe swap them for ones that have both a white light and a yellow cover. What about ones that are 2 inches tall and 6-8 inches wide.

The whole issue with lights in the fog is whitewash - where the light is refracted through the water droplets. The key is to keep the lights low and prevent the light from refracting above the hood line and into the line of sight. The yellower the light the less washout you will get.

These are the ones I got from Quadratec when I used to shop buy from them. During and even after the Covid they got so crappy I promised I would never buy from them again. I put the yellow Mylar on them and the led color and the Mylar give it a strange color. If I had it to do over I would keep the stock lights and but a yellow bulb.

Appreciate the info- you may have passed over my post below-

My bumper deck height is a lot higher, although I can physically mount the lights I am going to be blocking a headlight or turn signal in doing so…

I live in the mountains with heavy fog frequently. For me fog lights really do make a difference. Like you said, another "10 feet" makes a big difference. The important thing is to get a fog light designed specifically for "fog" and not one that is jack of all trades.

I have been running the lights below for a while with no issue. Picked them off a wrecked Volvo at work. They have a hard cut off line and work good.
I had them in the bumper at 1 time and moved to the top later on. They might be a 3" light. I don't have access to measure and find out, but maybe.

I have tried many fog lights and currently have different ones on my 5 cars. From my research and personal experience, when it comes to fog lights more wattage/brighter bulbs is not always better. In fact, if it is too bright it can actually be counter productive by reflecting back too much. A well designed fog light has crisp cutoff with a narrow but wide beam.

There is a lot of discussion to be had over 'yellow' lenses. Not every yellow lens is the best. Even white lights have a range of options and some colors are more natural than others obviously. I encourage doing a search for diode dynamics lights and any discussions from Bill (screen name ShadowsPapa). He outlines a lot of things regarding different Hughes of yellow, and yellow vs true amber, which is what most think of when they say 'yellow'. A true amber is way better for fog penetration if that is the primary purpose. Not all, in fact few, manufacturers make lights good for that color range. Before you spend $200 on some random name light, even a name brand, I suggest doing searching and reading over there on that topic. You won't be disappointed.

Definitely small enough, curious did you make your own bracket for mounting on top?

I’ll never forget the early morning fog heading towards Nashville coming up the hill outside of Chattanooga. Had to pee really really bad. Pulled over against the guardrail, jumped out, started peeing only to see the broken white line between my legs. That wasn’t the guardrail, it was just so foggy it looked like the guardrail.
There was no traffic thankfully so I jumped back in real quick, took back off and drove to the next rest stop to finish the pee🤦

Agreed. And, to make it even more confusing, some bulbs that are advertised as "amber" are actually yellow and vice versa.
