If I was forced to replace the hinges, I'd personally also buy the suggested morryde hinges (or similar), but not sure what size tire you're hanging back there.

Yes, I think the hinge stop is probably broken.
This is full swing on my tailgate:
If you look carefully at the back of the upper (and probably lower) hinge you can see a flared spot that will act as a stop when fully open.

i was checking out the morryde tailgate reinforcement/hinge/spare holder kit, it looks really nice. how involved is the installation for something like that? i'll most likely be alone so i don't know how manageable it'll be.
because i am not that thoughtful apparently. also i honestly hate it, i hate the way jerry-rigged stuff like this looks.

Another -1 for the taillight cage narrative. Only designed to smash your tailgate when you have that option
one thing i need to reiterate is that i have no idea what the OEM configuration for any of this vehicle is, so i have no idea if the tailgate that's on there now is even stock or not.
Someone did not like my dogging on the leaky diaper...
Avoid cages at all costs, if you bash the taillight, thats a simple replacement... but if you bash the cage..... thats a trip to the body shop with the pocket book.
That looks like the stock tailgate, all the aftermarket ones I have seen are raw aluminum and most times used to convert to a conventional drop down tailgate like the CJ.
That picture really makes me appreciate being on the west coast where winters don't actively try to destroy my cars......
Replacing the hinges is pretty easy except for getting the torx out can be a real bear. I used an impact driver when I did it last (the kind you hit with a hammer not the battery kind)

The install seems pretty simple. For your model (03-06 refresh) remove the plastic covers and remove the bolts, replace the hinge and tighten the new bolts. Though, do one hinge at a time.

Same for me down in North Texas, what is rust? All we get is faded paint and destroyed plastics thanks to ungodly amounts of UV and heat.

well i bought this specifically for the winter and for inclement weather like flooding which is a no-go for my DD. if i hit a patch of ice and wreck this in a ditch, i'll just look for another cheap used one to buy lol. beyond being totally expendable, it only gets driven a few times a year, so it's not worth investing a whole lot into.

Whoever cobbled that mess together didn't crimp the one visible sleeve. Adjust it to a length that does something.
Factory hinges for a factory tire size. Or the full MorrRyde kit with backing plates for a larger tire.
