I know you are from Maryland
Actually born and raise in central Pennsylvania. I moved here ~13 years ago for a job. I do like my current location geographically but I absolutely despise the politics of the state, and this place is not cheap to live. I don't see things getting better here politically, so suspect a move will be in my future. The "where" is the really tough question, but one I'm going to have to address. I am fortunate that I work remotely, so can shift locations without disruption of income.
As a country-boy, I agree. My skin starts to crawl as I get close to any population center. I lived in CT near my brother for a couple years a quarter century ago and made it to NYC once, and that was enough for me. We were supposed to spend the day there. I made it 45 minutes and said, "I need to go - NOW!" Yuck! My wife is like minded, so she wasn't upset. My brother knows me well, so he just laughed. My sister-in-law, well, she's well-practiced at giving a cold shoulder...
I can survive just about anywhere. But the truth is I find major metro areas to be cesspools of human filth and depravity. You can only stack people so high and close together until shit gets ugly (ref. NYC), even worse when "managed" by morons. Safe to say I like a bit of space...and my Constitutional rights.
