The good news thread

I know you are from Maryland

Actually born and raise in central Pennsylvania. I moved here ~13 years ago for a job. I do like my current location geographically but I absolutely despise the politics of the state, and this place is not cheap to live. I don't see things getting better here politically, so suspect a move will be in my future. The "where" is the really tough question, but one I'm going to have to address. I am fortunate that I work remotely, so can shift locations without disruption of income.

As a country-boy, I agree. My skin starts to crawl as I get close to any population center. I lived in CT near my brother for a couple years a quarter century ago and made it to NYC once, and that was enough for me. We were supposed to spend the day there. I made it 45 minutes and said, "I need to go - NOW!" Yuck! My wife is like minded, so she wasn't upset. My brother knows me well, so he just laughed. My sister-in-law, well, she's well-practiced at giving a cold shoulder...

I can survive just about anywhere. But the truth is I find major metro areas to be cesspools of human filth and depravity. You can only stack people so high and close together until shit gets ugly (ref. NYC), even worse when "managed" by morons. Safe to say I like a bit of space...and my Constitutional rights. ;)

We do take conservative Yankees down here.

Cost of living is very reasonable, just stay out of the cities, even Chattanooga is a piece of crap city now.

Duly noted. I have guns and ammo, so I suspect we'd find some common ground regardless of my obvious genetic flaws as someone birthed north of the Mason-Dixon. 🤠

All I know is, I spent a week in Burning Ham back in the summer of 2018 and I recall sweating so much it felt like my sweat glands had sweat glands. The only thing worse was the week I spent in Houston...I get why people drink down there. 🥵

Summers down here absolutely suck - not gonna lie. However, the other two weeks of the year are splendid! :ROFLMAO: 😬

You get used to it.... After working a couple summers here you barely even notice... Just gotta stay "hydrated"

Proud of my daughter: She’s 14 and since she was little(er) has wanted to be a Marine Biologist. For the past year she’s been building out her fish tanks and learning why we support local businesses instead of “just ordering from Amazon”. After almost weekly visits, many emails, building a relationship with the owners of our local Aquatics store, and asking for a job almost every visit, they finally relented and offered her an internship.

She’s too young to be paid formally, but lots of life lessons in working for a small business, including scrubbing algae off the back tanks for two hours, and that if you work for good people, your hard work is usually rewarded. She got an array of new fish comped by the owners since she’d worked for it and hopefully this is the start of a long term relationship.

Sometimes I have hope in humanity.

She's developing a great work ethic. I'm sure she'll be successful in whatever field she chooses.

You went to school in Williamsport, where were you raised? I'm in the Lock Haven area.

Technically south central PA, I suppose, York County. I regularly passed through most places along 11-15 north as a kid, my grandfather had a camp up in Wellsboro, Tioga County. Used to love visiting that place.

Dad lived in Nottingham for several years, I went to visit once and that was enough for me........

PA is a lovely place geographically, specific to the rural areas. Nottingham is getting closer to Philly, or what I like to call "the asshole of the commonwealth". Up @LukesfirstJeep's way, it's pretty nice, as well as the Laurel Highlands. Nice swath of the Appalachians through the state.

A friend of mine went to college for marine biology.

He became a funeral home owner and he owns a monument company.

A former co-worker put his youngest daughter through law school. She passed her bar exam, but decided to tend bar, instead. My buddy was pissed.

True story.

I vaguely recall a study done years ago where they claimed something like most people would change careers at least once in their working lifetime and many people with post-secondary education in a specific major would end up employed in an unrelated field of work.

Not sure if there's any truth to it on that scale, but I fit the bill. That said, I'm also over 50 and still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up... :D

I'm in my early 60's retired early to take care of Dad, worked different jobs, grew up farming, Land Survey, forge drop hammer operator, back to farming, dispatch/load planning logistics, Owner operator, diesel mechanic, shop foreman, fleet maintenance manager, service manager.

I still don't know what I want to do.......
