Just failed inspection due to worn ball joints and quoted $1500 by a shop.

Is this something I could do myself in an autozone parking lot? What special tools do I need?

Does anyone have specific parts recommendations, or should I just go in rockauto for a good deal.

Inspect Deez nuts

Yes, the clamp/press they will loan you for free and a 12pt 13mm socket or wrench

And a Harbor Freight ball joint press.

Things to do along the way...unit bearings...axle ball joints...brakes...strip and paint the knuckles...axle seals inside the differential. Tie rod ends.

That's a pretty impressive NC inspection if they failed you for ball joints... I can assist if you are ever in Durham area.

We get a lot of from from CA here in south western Oregon. I have the impression people are trying to get away from overcrowding which causes high prices and too many rules among other things. I don't really blame them. You put too many rats in a cage and they kill each other, no matter how beautiful the cage is. Who doesn't want to get away from that?
