I need to replace my TJ radiator

What the hell is with the radiators? LOL I was under the jeep yesterday putting my new front track bar on and saw some moisture on the ground. Opened the hood and there was a crack in the upper pan. Thought about being a cheap bastard and trying to JB Weld it for the short term but common sense and the fact that a Texas summer is right around the corner slapped me in the back of the head. I have been reading our forums and looking on my own. Have any of you had experience with Mishimoto? I have used their intercooler on a diesel and loved it but thats a highway puller and not an off roader. They have a welded pan Aluminum radiator thats a bit pricey at 500 bucks I might try. I have never been a fan of the crimped pans ever but it seems to be the way they all went sometime around the 80's or 90's.

You can temporarily fix it with JB weld and mesh while you find a replacement.

Contrary to the assertion that there exists "forum darlings" who should be ignored, we have a ton of experience with the TJ cooling system. Most may not be aware that there is a group of us who have worked on this over many years here in SoCal where we need the system to work very well. We share info and what works and what has not worked. We all went through the same process over the years. Mopar can't be that good, surely the aftermarket is better so we all did what everyone does, screw Mopar, we're going to try the "fancy" shit. We did, I started with several all copper and brass CSF units because I was told Mopar sucked. My wife kicking my ass because she couldn't run the AC on the freeway convinced me at least part of that was wrong. The leaks starting several places in the others convinced me on the rest of them. Lots of folks have come through here and the other folks I'm in contact with and we keep track of what we see. We've seen early failures in all of them except 2. Mopar and Northern. I'm not a fan of Northern because they built it on a rig without an AC condenser and you (a) have to pull the grill to install one and (b) you have to build spacers to move them towards the motor to get them off of the AC condenser. Their experiences and mine are exactly the same. We've tried most of them, they either don't cool or they don't last very long or both.

I just installed a Denso in a rig as a test. It is a manual so the demand on the system isn't quite as high so it seemed safe to cool and so far it has but we are not in the hot months yet. I am under obligation to swap in one of my Mopar versions if it won't cool as it should. I am not under obligation if it fails in short order.

I am like everyone else, I want a great alternative that is under 400 bucks. I want them to cool as well as OEM and I want them to last a 100,000 miles. That is a fair request for that much money. Right now, I don't have that answer but as you can see, I've got limited stock on hand so the answer needs to be found.

I only have one regret in all of this. I was doing some work on a rig other than the cooling system and it had a nice looking fully welded nicely made 2 row aluminum radiator in it. Like always, I asked him how it was and they related that it had been in use several years, it worked as well as OEM in the hot months, and it was relatively inexpensive about 300 or so. Where did you get it? Forgot. Do you remember the brand? Nope, I don't and it has been so long, all I remember is I carried into a shop after I bought it and had them install it. So there it is, the elusive well made cheap unicorn and we won't ever know what it was or where it came from.

I've only just come across this thread. I don't know how much a Nissens rad would cost in the USA, and mine obviously doesn't have to work in the temps you can get in California (Max here has been 39C/102F on my commute).

I've had a Nissens rad in my TJ since 2011, with at least 120 miles on it now. I believe Nissens are an OEM supplier to some brands, and my Nissens rad has far outlasted my OEM radiator.

They weren't light beers I was drinking. Average was around 8%. I stopped at four beers as I wanted to start doing the BM break-in today.

I've got a nice eisbock in the garage. Only twenty seven percent that one.

Oh is that all try 40-50 percent. Lol I like bottled in bond.

May as well step up to the properly dehydrated "beers" your northern neighbors make.

So real quick back on topic before I join the off topic whiskey and moonshine conversation. Below are the two I have narrowed down to trying. Prolly buying this week I don't trust the jb weld on plastic tanks for long. Both appear to be made with quality components. I really trust yalls opinions but stock is getting hard to find and I'm willing to test one of these.

AFE 3Core
Mishimoto

Neither.

Denso.

Koyorad A2102 - I think this is probably the leading option available at the moment and the pricing is good. There is a fitment issue for certain years automatics, but no issue for a manual.

I picked one up as a spare to have on hand a little while ago as both my dad and I have TJs and I have a cool dark place to store it safely. It honestly appears slightly better made than the Mopar. Tubes are a few mm longer front to back. They're all pressure tested before release and Koyo have developed a really good reputation among people doing crazy things with import motors running 30psi in the radiators.

I do generally think Denso is a good option and a good OE manufacturer, but there are enough reports of the Denso model for TJs not keeping up well in very hot climates, to make me a little concerned. I just linked over to one parallel thread, but it's been said enough times that they have shown issues in the AZ and CA deserts, which suggests they don't have much excess capacity.

I wouldn’t hesitate to run a Koyorad either.

There actually are more people running Denso radiators in hot environments with no issues than those who have had issues. Really, there is mainly one very vocal and angry poster around here who makes the claim based on his sample size of one.

My Denso radiator in my TJ worked great in Phoenix AZ and other hot places as well as slow trail riding during hot summers. I’d happily run one again. I might get a lemon….but odds are good I won’t.

Every manufacturer makes lemons. Just the way it is. If you don’t trust Denso, give Koyorad (or whatever brand excites you) a try.

But, I would have no issues using a Koyorad either and think it’s a solid recommendation as well.

The all aluminum radiators, while they look good, mostly fail quickly. A few people have reported good life and performance but most report early failures with them. And, those failures aren’t just in Jeeps.

I think the no name parts store radiators just like all the junk bin parts store thermostats made Motorad are high risks (not including the Mopar part made by Motorad). You get a free replacement, but that doesn't cover a cracked head or blown head gasket.

This I completely agree with and the failures are almost always in the brazing of the core, which just sucks. There isn't a clear reason why the cores are failing and they just shouldn't be. We used to absolutely have this figured out! Is the heat of welding degrading the brazing? Is it poor sourcing? Poor QA upstream?

Meanwhile the plastic tanks always eventually fail on a good stock type radiator.

Why can't we have good lifetime radiators?

So I chose my own path don't hate on me but I did the Mishimoto. Came packaged really well with welded pans, rubber isolaters, and stainless bolts for everything. I slotted the shroud for the future tummy tuck while I had it off anyways. Early temperature reading wont be fair since a cold front blew in yesterday. Ill let everyone know how it comes out this summer when we hit 110 degrees. Fit was absolutely perfect. Price was a little steep at 450 but it was that or the AFE at 550 and my goal was to try to stay under 400 (I know I went a little over).
