How do you insure your TJ?

Does Hagerty is limited miles as well isn't it?

Mine is my DD so limited miles won't work for me. I have multiple Jeeps (just the one TJ). Full coverage on all.. NY Central Mutual. Not cheap. I get hosed because I live on the water, on a peninsula, and there is only one insurer that will cover the house and that company only does home insurance so no companion discounts.. That sucks.

When I added mine to my Hagerty policy, I set the mileage and am able to change it to whatever I want.

I see a lot of folks talking about Hagerty for classic car insurance. Has anyone used Grundy

I had Grundy on one of my classic cars for a few years, but never had any type of claim. I switched to Hagerty because 1- they offered slightly better coverage for only $10 extra on that car, and 2 - Hagerty would cover my non-typical vehicles, like my Jeep and '99 Integra, if I had a classic car covered by them. I've been with Hagerty since '18 I think. Grundy would not cover either of those vehicles at that time.

Regardless of who you select, tell them you never wheel it, its not modified, and don't send them pictures.

I've been cover by both Grundy and Hagerty, they both required pictures of all 4 sides of each vehicle and proof of storage before they agreed to coverage. Not sending pic will have you not covered.

Yes and no. They want an estimated mileage, but don't check or need updates. I'm sure if you make a claim, they'll be checking.

But would it fly with Hagerty to say my annual miles are more than 10k? Curious as to the limits to qualify as a classic car

Rule #1 is they do not cover daily driven vehicles. Rule #2 you must have and provide proof of a registered and insured daily driven vehicle. As for a Jeep being a "classic", IDK what their current requirements are, but I had to have an established policy with a classic car on it before they would add coverage of my Jeep.

I believe with Grundy the vehicle has to be 25 years old at least. My 1999 just hits the mark.

I can't tell you their current requirements or that of Hagerty, I just know when I was looking to cover my Jeep Grundy said no, and Hagerty made an exception because I had an established policy. I've never had a claim with either of them, and it was worth the switch from standard insurance for me.

Makes sense, thanks for the input.

Can anyone help with info about Hagerty or Grundy? I read the Use Requirements and they both mention "no offroad." Of course, I'm going offroad. That's mainly what I'm doing with it. Drive to trail, go offroad. Sometimes pleasure drive it. Sometimes pull a small trailer and go camping. But not a DD, garage kept. Do you just offroad it and not worry about their requirement that you not offroad it?

What did you end up with @lBasket ? YOu started this thread!

I don't have any specific information about Hagerty or Grundy, however when dealing with insurance companies in general such requirements (often called 'exclusions' in the policy language), they are present to act as sort of built in contractual defenses. They of course have no idea what you are, or aren't, doing with your vehicle at any time, it only becomes an issue on the back end when you make a claim. At that time, they'll ask questions to determine if you've violated a policy provision (breached the contract) at which time they may issue a reservation of rights and/or fully disclaim coverage once they've completed their investigation. Their investigation can include recorded statements of you, inspection of the vehicle, witness statements... and if those reveal some level of fuckery you can figure out what may happen.

All that said, you may wheel it regularly without incident then get rear-ended while going to the corner store to get a pack of Twinkies in which case no red flags would likely be raised.

Matters of insurance claims and coverage are always fact-specific. One thing you can count on is that the (fill in the blank) Insurance Company will go to great lengths to not pay a claim if they suspect a valid reason exists to not pay.

I Think westtown willy nailed it, but I thought I should add, if the claim is real bad, theyre going to dig past just the surface. They'll probably check social media to see if they can find pictures or posts about you off reading your jeep. I can tell you Hagerty looked at my Facebook in the application process. They had questions for me about my jeep being at the beach and we had a but of a debate about what exactly constitutes "off-road".

Insurance companies can be bastards, and lying to them is not worth it in my experience, because often when you need them, you *really* need them.

There's no probably about it, examination of social media is a standard move, my above recitation was cursory.

When I said they'll go to great lengths, that can mean anything, including retaining counsel to take your sworn statement (deposition under oath) which you can bet will be done only after they already have all the evidence they believe they need; I've sat though what seems like thousands of these things at this stage and I agree that lying to them is not worth it, just as lying in general is a bad idea. I'm referring mostly to much more involved injury claims that include an element of property damage rather than property damage only, I don't waste my time on those alone.

An insurance adjuster with a hard-on will gladly spend more than the value of the claim to avoid paying the claim which I've always assumed was done to send a message, and I'll tell you that I received that message early in my practice so my advice to clients is always the same, shoot straight or get the hell out of my office. I can typically root out these things on intake and if I smell a rat I decline representation, it's hard enough fighting carriers on wholly legitimate claims, I don't need to waste my time mud wrestling pigs over bullshit claims.

Lol yeah I fail at reading comprehension, totally missed that line. I also failed to properly convey that it isnt just your social media they'll check, but that of your friends and family too.

Reminds me.of back in the day when the Mitsubishi Evo 8 came out, and Mitsubishi had a team of people going through the web and recording which vehicles they could find pictures of at racetracks, so that they could pre-emptively void their warranties.

I had Grundy 10+ years ago, not on my Jeep, they wouldn't insure it back then, which is a big reason I switched to Hagerty. Will Grundy insure these Jeeps now?

I ended up using Hagerty and have 0 intention on filing a claim for any damage that would occur on a trail
