Power steering cooler

Curious what your thoughts are on the other side of the cooler , on the fluid side the " log " style cooler would seem to be greatly affected by the boundary layer next to the cooler tube wall . This would leave a lot of the fluid passing through the center of the larger diameter of the cooler without much drop in delta T . Thank You .

Isn't the heat sink Log style cooler what we were talking about , with it's amazing ability for URGENT heat storage . Brother , I'm throwing a second B.S. flag on this play .

During low-speed, high-load maneuvers—where airflow is non-existent—the log’s increased mass acts as a thermal reservoir. It is designed for the urgent absorption of extreme heat spikes generated by turning large tires against resistance, prioritizing immediate 'heat soaking' over the rapid air-transfer capabilities of a tube-and-fin design.

Not for nothing, but the only time there is no air flow is when the rig is not running and pointed downwind.
 
Thanks for the photo , since your eyes are better than the photo , What's the inside diameter of the ends internal fins ? Just curious , Thanks Blaine .
The picture is actually highly representative of what you can see. There is a "turbulator" of sorts and then the internal fins. Derale is very commonly available if you want to acquire one to dissect. I'm not interested because nothing said by anyone is going to change the fact that they work with zero penalty to the cooling system. I've used them on every build I've done and my folks wheel in JV when they should not be out there. Rubicon in the summer time, Big Bear in the summer time, Moab, Sand Hollow etc. and we just don't have a problem with the high volume high pressure steering pumps over heating.

If we did, everyone on here that knows anything about me knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that I'd find a way to stop the problem and fix it. It is also very common knowledge that it would not be adversely affected by cost. We'll spend whatever it takes to stop problems. Run whatever you like, I'm going to keep solving the problem the same way I have for many years.

For reference, the Setrab trans cooler is one of those. I have a stack of 10-12 trans coolers we tried over the years to get the 42 to behave in our area. The only one I was able to readily acquire, fit into the area, and which actually worked well enough to install even through it is painfully expensive and tedious to do is the Setrab. There is nothing about it I am happy about except the function. It costs too much and is too much work to install but here we are.

One of my greater joys in life is watching folks spout theory and then practicable application proves that either incorrect, or inconsequential. My blizzard of bullshit is based in the experiences of 100's of folks with TJ's who run extruded heat sink steering coolers, a Setrab radiator style trans cooler below that, and then a winch in front of that. If there were any merit whatsoever to your assertions, they would overheat pulling out of the driveway and they don't. You got big fancy words, all I got is little words and actually doing the work and my little words prove your big ones are to be soundly ignored.

Yes, I put a lot of effort into minimizing ANY radiator obstruction and that includes mounting a winch as low as practical. The TJ with that front cross member sort of limits the options there but I set the winch plate directly on it and moved the Zeon contactor under the hood. I've been doing this stuff for better than 6 decades, long enough to know what actually works and what is a bunch of hyper BS. But like angry birds, a fool and his money are soon parted.

And again, there is nothing you can say that stops what we've been doing from working very well. You can be mean, hateful, condescending, dismissive, righteous, and even rude but you still can't change what has been working just fine, accept that or don't, it won't change what works and has been working.

We are not looking at what just "works" here rather what works BEST. The fined tubes do have one advantage and that is they are usually a lot easier to mount. Sticking a tube and fin version to the radiator with plastic ties doesn't rate that in my book.
