I've got a whistle (my turn)

I have not been able to find another whistle description that matches mine. This has been going on for 8 months (I've had the TJ for 12 months)

No whistle when:
The engine is cold and is not developing significant vacuum
While I am accelerating
After the engine warms up completely

Whistle happens when:
The coolant is warmed up to temp and I am coasting/not accelerating

It lasts for about 10-15 minutes between when the coolant reaches temp and the engine is fully warmed up.

I did watch the vacuum via Torque and while the engine was cold, it wasn't developing more than -18 psi and there was no whistle​

Once the coolant was up to temp, and I started developing -25 psi of vacuum the whistle started (while coasting)​

It stopped (as usual) about 10 minutes later when the engine was up to temp.​

I have not been able to reproduce it without the Jeep in motion. So, the mechanic's stethoscope is (so far) unsued.

Last month I replaced:

• Timing chain, gears, tensioner and gasket
• Water pump
• Thermostat
• Belt tensioner
• Idler pully
• Harmonic balancer
• Serpentine belt
• Throttle body gasket

I'm sure it didn't all need it, but I was only taking the fan out once if I could!

I have tightened every bolt I could find and put hose clamps on every vacuum hose I could identify.

This is driving me nuts!

Been going on for a while now, but when it's cold in the mornings, I get a high pitch whistle that I can modulate with the gas pedal, Seem louder on deceleration. After about 10 minutes in to my commute it goes away. I checked the vacuum lines going to the manifold and valve cover and they seem fine. I can't pinpoint where the whistle is coming from. Could it be a bad intake manifold gasket?

Sounds like you might have a Vacuum leak, have you smoke tested it yet?

I've had a whistle on decel before that turned out to be a loose manifold bolt.

I guess I'll have to pick one up. Between the (likely) vacuum leak in the TJ and the evap leak in the 2004 Volvo. It's probably worth it.

Found it, or at least I found the first link in the chain! The boot on the PCV hose was cracked and "expertly" repaired with some black duct tape.
Part is ordered. Thanks @Redsquatch for suggesting the smoke test. Don't spent the 1/2 cent from the affiliate link all in one place. .

Once I get this replaced, I will smoke test it again. Hopefully that was the only leak!

Replacing the PCV hose helped, but now I need to replace the throttle body...

Don't replace it. Try this...and mine leaks in many of the same places as yours and I have zero issues.

Yeah, I didn't have much hope. My lack of hope was justified. The smoke test showed a little less than half as much smoke, but the whistle was just as prevalent.

Looks like I'm dropping some cash on a throttle body. I just need to find one. Rock Auto doesn't have them. I guess I need to look around.

I can't find anything aftermarket that says it fits a 2006 for under $300. Not even one made of Chinesium.

I get the same amount of smoke and no whistle.

I think a lot of use have the same leaking throttle bodies.

Do you have any idle issues?

I get the same amount of smoke as well from the TB, with a similar whistle issue. Note that I stuck the end of the hose on port on top of the manifold.. Ended up spraying all around it with no change in idle or whistle tone. So I was able to eliminate the TB as being the culprit. Have you tried that yet, before you waste your money on another TB?

Also where did you shoot the smoke. I saw a clip with a dude was sticking the hose up the tailpipe.. (I know… don’t make it weird). Seemed the smoke was able to make it to the headers where he found a little crack. Have you attempted this, yet?

I’m not that smart but it makes sense, since the TB is right next to the port, the smoke will escape there first. Maybe the rear approach will show conclusively you have a gasket or header issue. Hell I think the connection from the header to exhaust pipe has been known to make a similar whistle as well.. I hate noises.

I replaced my throttle body last week. 5 drivers later... No whistle.

I could not find one for the 2006, so I bought one for a 2004. It came with the sensors, but two of them had different plugs. I swapped those with the old ones and kept the solenoid (which had the right plug). I fired it up and it was idling at ~ 2750. I shut it off and move the solenoid over from the old throttle body. That fixed the idle.

I've taken it out multiple times and the whistle is now gone. I guess I got lucky.
