Has anyone used the 10mm OME spacers with OME light duty springs?

Hi Everyone, I am a new LJ owner and need some advice. I recently ordered an OME ultimate kit with the light duty springs. I don't plan on adding any additional weight and wanted a smooth ride. The question I have is about spacers with the Light Springs. Has anyone used the 10mm OME spacers or other spacers in the front and rear to gain another 1/2 or so with the Light springs? I would like to gain about 2 1/2 inches with the lift. Thanks!

Springs have no affect on ride quality. That's the job of the shocks and your tire pressure.

The 10mm springs add roughly 1/2" extra of lift, that is the general consensus. So with the springs and spacers, you'll have 2.5" of lift.

A 10mm spacer is a hair over 3/8". That is how much lift they will add.

I'll be surprised if the light duty springs add a full 2". How did you arrive at those particular ones for a heavier LJ?

Agree with the above. For an LJ, I would have chosen the HD springs, even if you weren't planning on adding bumpers and everything else.

In addition to the regular HD springs, there are two more options for the LJ.

Take it from a person who installed the LD OME springs, they will give you at or slightly less than 2" on a short wheel base TJ. I imagine they would give less than that on an LJ. I did add 3/4" spring spacers after the fact, to get back a little more lift. I should have listened to @Chris when he recommended the HD springs, but I was mistakenly thinking the springs would give a harsher ride. I don't have any regrets from using the LD springs, really, other than not quite the lift I was expecting. Putting those on a heavier LJ, on the other hand, just seems less than ideal.

X2 to the above comment from Chris, it's the shock absorbers that determine the ride quality. The primary job of the springs is a simple one, to support the weight of the Jeep. Light duty springs will sag sooner too.

Personally I'd go with heavy duty springs with Rancho RS5000X shocks which from first-hand experience provide a superb ride together with superb offroad control... a rare combination of traits.

Any chance you can change your order to heavy duty springs?

Yes, I use those 10 mm spacers.

Bollocks, changing spring lb'age has a vast effect on ride quality.

My current daily has coil-overs and is set-up for R-spec tyres it rides atrociously, but works superbly on a smooth racetrack. However, if I swap over the springs to a lesser lb'age set it rides fine (but handles "not as well" on a smooth racetrack).

A vehicles suspension works as a package and its all compromise.

Do agree that the HD springs would have been a better option, especially if you are running larger tires as a heavier wheel/tire package adds unsprung weight. In theory, the HD springs should produce a rougher ride but in practice with the larger tires, they ride ok.

....

Don't try to compare the tunability of coilovers with the very narrow range of spring rates we have available for our TJs. Most people will never be able to tell a difference between a higher and a lower rate spring that both provide a similar ride height. Shocks will always have a more dramatic effect on the ride.

X2, exactly. Coilovers and conventional springs are apples and oranges.

Well you can, and I will. Making blanket statements like whats been suggested is utterly incorrect and lead people to think that you can choose any makers spring (as apparently they just hold up the vehicle) throw a shock at it that as a fluke just happens to suit a TJ and all's good.

A better stance is to suggest to newcomers, that in practise it's known that certain brands of suspension kits/combinations work well with certain size wheel/tyre packages and barwork and produce acceptable ride quality/height/load carrying ability.

Have at it. What do you recommend for the OP?

I agree with the other guys, he should have gone with the HD springs.

From what I've seen of ARB locally the kit would have been originally set-up for a standard Tj or a TJ on 30's with ARB Barwork. So their paperwork and hence suggestions are more than likely based on that package for the light springset. When guys are running 33's and 35's and heavier skidplates etc, all of a sudden the HD springs work really well and it should be the standard suggestion to most on here.

Which brings up a good question, what is the intended tire size?

Thanks guys for all the help! This forum never disappoints. I will be running 33 tires. Only additional weight is an exogate and 33 spare.

I am going to call back DPG and see if I can switch out for the heavy springs. Does anyone have the part numbers?

One thing to note on the OME Light Duty 932 vs Heavy Duty 933 front springs is that they have exactly the same spring rate. The HD springs are about a half inch taller free length, that's all. The rears are different...the HD 942 springs are actually about a half inch shorter than the 941 LD springs, but have a firmer rate.

Just ask Dirk for the HD springs, or tell him what you are looking for. Here are the part numbers though.

Calling Dirk is a good idea. He will ask you questions in order to estimate the weight of your Jeep. Then he can recommend the appropriate front and rear springs for your desired ride height.

Also, 33s really need 3.5-4" of total lift. There isn't an OME coil out there that is adequate for 33s without a small body lift. Even then, it is only barely enough if you get the bump stop and shock lengths right.
