Pretty sure that is an urban legend...I'd think it would tear suspension mounting points before it lifted the vehicle.
Scary day.. there apparently must have been a bad casting in my slip yoke because shattered as I was going 95 and my driveshaft shot out the back and bounced up about 15 feet on the air. Luckily it didnt hit anyone. Needless to say I have a new drive shaft on order.
1st, that’s scary as hell and glad no one was injured.
2nd, the latter posts about it lifting the vehicle is an urban legend. I’ve worked numerous crashes on the interstate where driveshafts blew out (including commercial vehicles). No vehicle had ever flipped. Plenty of undercarriage damage and sometimes complete separation (which usually causes another crash after it hits another vehicle or gets run over).
Now, axle shafts are another story. I’ve seen those things come flying out of housings (w/ tires still on them) and tumble into oncoming traffic, causing serious damage and major pucker factor!
