So, this is a weird situation. Found a 98 wrangler with no title but would make a good parts Jeep pending whatever is actually on it. Good hardtop/wheels/half doors with slider window. Axles?? Not sure, don't even know what model (X, Sport etc.) it is. It's cheap and I could part out and turn a profit but its a weird situation.
I asked for the VIN to check the build sheet and generally not trying to ask a bunch of stupid questions, this was the response.
"It's not a 1967 camero yenko lol. It's a Jeep. 6 cylinder and 5 speed. Got it for daughter 16 birthday. Guy had title signed in his sister name. Was supposed to get me title but she in army over seas. He said having hard time getting her right paper work. I don't have time to wait and he doesn't have the money to return. So stuck with a trail Jeep. Have bill of sale for Jeep from him. Going to take to court but still don't have enough time before her birthday. So trying to sell as trail Jeep no title. Still good deal."

I don't want to title it, just want parts and sell the rest. Seems like a big flag if the "owner" comes home an goes looking for it. But then, if I sell the tub with a VIN, well, crap. Jeep below, because I don't want you know who to give me the "this thread is useless without pictures" line.
The only picture they posted, seems dumb to ask a guy to crawl around the ground and identify stuff for a cheap parts jeep.
Anyone deal with a situation like this?

I'd run the VIN through your local police station first to make sure it's not stolen.

Hell, I wouldn't buy it at all even if it doesn't come up as stolen. Since there is no title, whoever has the title could report it stolen at any point. If you have possession of it and decide to part it out while it comes up as stolen suddenly, then you become someone who is parting out a stolen vehicle.

I don't care how cheap it is, without a title, I wouldn't touch it... not one bit. More risk than reward IMHO.

If you don't have the title.. can't someone say it is stolen?
That's what I'd think, but If I had a bill of sale I could try and cover my buns; in theory at least.
It's a simple dang half second task, told him I'd be saving us both the hassle of asking/answering pointless questions. But dang, if it has a Dana 44 under it, that would be a heck of a score. My luck, it will not have the Dana 44.

I'm going to run it through NICB and see if anything pops up, but getting the VIN seems to be the issue. All around a weird deal for sure.

Which makes it even more suspicious. The seller should have no problem giving up the VIN. The fact that they don't want to give you the VIN is a red flag.

That seller sounds like an idiot. I'm going to assume this is a Craigslist find (I say that because Craigslist seems to be overflowing with idiots).

Can anybody make out the last name on the window. When i get home i might be able to run it through global and send an email about it. Depending on how common the last name is.

I assumed the same.

Walk away.. but it won't be empty handed.

At least you know it isn't a Yenko camero.

If the guy won't even give you a VIN, why should you help him to get rid of a Jeep he can't even get a title for, and is willing to 'go to court' over?

Yeah, this has to be a CL scam. Titled owner military and overseas. Cheap. Sob story. Sketchy personality.

VINS are posted online on dealers sites, you can walk up to any vehicle and get them, no plausible reason not to give it to you....... unless it's stolen or not in his possession.

You will need a title to scrap whatever you don't sell anyway.

Pass.

Yep, that military story is a typical sob story... I don't buy it for one minute. Seems like a scam to me too... something is up here. Failure to disclose the VIN is a huge red flag, regardless of whether it's a "Yenko Camaro" or not.

Bill of sale will keep the law off you but the jeep won’t stay with you

It's a Facebook marketplace ad, we are close to Ft. Campbell as well so it all is plausible.
Dude apparently isn't smart or he would have caught the title error when he forked over the cash.
SPC. Brekew or Grekew, cant quite make it out, must have been a **removed**

***Had to edit, got a lovely message about that joke. FYI, I was in the Army 01-08, so the joke was simply a friendly inter service rivalry joke, not to offend anyone. Can't believe I even had to type that.***

name looks like Urekew I opened the pic, hit ctr + to zoom in.

Alright, this guy is a real dummy. Will not give the VIN even after I showed him how to run a build sheet.
I dont get why even put something for sale if you plan to hide the VIN, I would have seen it the second I showed up.
Sorry to waste everyone's time.

You're all good. We are all sitting on the internet forums talking about jeeps. Probably because are friends and family are sick of us talking about jeeps. What would we do without forums. :)
