Rattle from transmission that goes away when clutch is pushed in

Well, if those two people are knowledgeable/experienced with TJs then I would heed their advice.

I know this will come off as asshole-ish and I don't mean it that way, but if two people told you to get it fixed why wouldn't you? It seems pretty cut and dry, if you are worried about being stranded (with AAA) and a have two hands-on (so to say) opinions then get it rebuilt.

Unless those people are just drumming up business.

And how experienced are they, not with just Jeeps but with the quarks of the NV3550?

How does one eliminate the former and verify the latter given "you don't know what you don't know"?

Very interesting read.

This is a small part of the article wrote in 2008. From https://transmissiondigest.com
On the surface they seem to be a real publisher for the transmission industry. After seaching NV3550 on there site i found a few more articles but i do not have access. Im not a subscriber. I almost want to pay just to read up on this. From what i was able to glean.

Do not let this QUOTE mislead you read the whole article. It explains exactly what you are hearing. And why there is no fix. But that doesn't mean its a failure ready to happen.

The NV 3550 is a variation of the
3500 that is used behind the 4.0-
liter engine in Jeeps. This unit suf-
fers from incurable gear rattle, gear
jump-out and notchy, noisy shift-
ing. There is one cure for this con-
dition, and that is to replace the
unit with an AX15, which is a di-
rect bolt-in, using the same clutch
set, hydraulics, cross member and
driveshaft. Depending on the
model and year of the Jeep it may
be necessary to change the shifter
and the input shaft of the transfer
case.

Indeed. It seems the NV3550 has bad lineage.

Thanks for the info!

Very interesting......

So I guess my options are to get a AX15 or automatic...
Well that is ONLY if you cant stand the noise. It does say "Gear rattle or neutral-rollover noise does not affect the operation
of the transmission or do any dam-
age to the gear train,"

Again, I wouldn't worry about it if the transmission shifts fine and the noise is your only concern. Plenty of us, myself included, have had no issues driving with it in that state. It's well known to be a loud transmission.

Looking for some advice. I have a sound coming from my trans (02, 4.0, manual). It only occurs when it warms up and clutch out. Push clutch in sound goes away. Rattling sound... I was told it was coming from the center on the transmission. Everything in the bell housing is new. Took it to a very reputable transmission shop they said it needed to be rebuilt. It shifts OK...notchy but ok. Should I send the $$ to get it rebuilt now or wait? I am sure it will have to be done sometime in the near future. Thanks

If the transmission shifts fine and the noise is your only concern I wouldn't worry too much about being stranded. Mine is quite noisy but shifts great and I haven't let it stop me from going out to remote locations. These are just plain old noisy transmissions.

When you push in your clutch, the slave cylinder pushes the fork forward and the other side presses into a notch and doesn’t move. Once you release, does it rattle again?

If so, it may be the retaining clip on the fork inside the bell housing. It’s like $1.77.

Just spitballing.
