What do you guys use to camp / live out of your Jeeps?

I thoroughly enjoy my roof top tent, sleeping in it is very comfortable, the mattress is a memory foam job..... I have to agree it is expensive, even with the smoking deal I got my used one for. We slept at elevation in the Rockies and were quite comfortable inspire of the freezing rain and heavy frost each morning. Additionally the trailer offered an easy way to have comforts that would have taken up to much space in the Jeep. My akita has pretty much the whole back of the Jeep when we are wheeling or just driving, but at camp we still have very comfortable chairs, a home made skottle for cooking on as well as a decent stove, 21 gallons of drinkable water and an on demand hot water heater for showers....... it is worth it to Lucy and I

I don't understand it either personally. I suppose it looks cool of anything?
You're too practical @Chris and @Jerry. It's people like us that don't understand half the mods people do to there Jeep. But its there Jeep, so I guess they can have at it. Oh wait, Chris, you've done every mod!

Yep, that is exactly what it is, they originated in South Africa but the commercial ones here are crazy expensive so I made my own for $40...... It is a very easy and durable cooking option......

I never said there was anything wrong with it, I simply said that I don't understand it.

In no way am I trying to be negative. Like I said, I think it looks cool!

I used to sell a few different brands of roof-top tents when I worked for a rack shop, and I can agree about it not being everyone's style, I too don't care much for them for what I do. For some people I think it truly is about the looks!

Though for certain circumstances they really can be much easier and convenient, a lot of them do setup quite quickly! But again, to each their own :D. I'm personally a fan of conventional tents.

Looks like a lot of work to set all that up, I simply don't understand the benefit of extra work/design/expense to get a tent up off the ground.
For a full set up of my campsite, it takes about an hour. Most of it being me trying to figure out how to unfold my coleman camping table.
For a stop over during an overlanding run, set up to sleep is about 10 minutes

Reasons I like the elevated tent route:
I camp in hog infested areas and they will attack a tent (Ask me how I know)
Alligators
No matter where I park the trailer, its level and has a memory foam mattress (trying to find a level suitable area for a tent is a PITA)
There's an annex room that goes under it so I have more usable space
It sets up in half the time of a big pole tent
It looks cool
And most importantly, my wife thinks bears can't get her in an elevated tent

....I'm personally a fan of conventional tents.

Me too! I think you'er a sissy if you need a floor.

Yeah there are a decent amount of advantages to a RTT:

1. A lot of them fold out and can actually be set up in minutes
2. If you do a lot of Dispersed camping you can kind of camp anywhere
3. Critters/Snakes/etc in certain areas
4. If you camp somewhere prone to flooding, you'll stay drier.

Personally, I've never used one although I plan to in the future. It does add a lot of flexibility which I appreciate over traditional camping which I do right now and I camp pretty minimal currently.
