2004 TJ Under Hood Light

Hi All,

I would like to install an under hood light on my TJ. It looks like this is the Mopar part number below. However, Amazon says it will not fit my TJ. Anyone know for sure if this will work?

That's the correct p/n, you can't trust Amazon's advice 100% on whether it fits or not.

@Fonz54 if you havent ordered, there is a thread on this, sorry i cant remember, but there is a hood light with a retractable cord that will fit.
And i cant ugh paste links with this fone.
If i remember the retractable cord was 10 feet or more, you could move it around the engine bay, very handy and it coils and retracts out of the way when done.

The retractable light is found in a lot of 90’s GM trucks.

My 1990 Chevy fullsize Blazer 4x4 had one that rolled up inside itself/retracted. Search ebay for a used one.

I installed one on my 06 TJ and added an LED bulb and it works great especially since it has its own on-off switch. I removed the stock mercury switch under hood light and used that for my power supply. The GM part number is 15990293 and there are several on eBay. Its a great add and pretty much gives light all around my Jeep when uncoiled.

An interesting comment regarding the mercury switch, those were phased out in all vehicles due to environmental concerns well before the TJ existed. Ours have a ball bearing switch, which is why they don't work very well. But most junk yards simply assume all cars still use mercury switches for their under hood lights, even new ones. That is why it is difficult to find and buy a used under hood light at a salvage yard. It's easier to tell the employees to remove all of them rather than keep track of which cars do and don't have mercury switches.

If you get the MOPAR light, this is a good LED to put in it. The ends are tweeted so the light shines down instead of to the side of the light housing like some led made for it do. I have one in my OEM underhood light and I’m happy with it. Nice and bright.

What number LED bulb do you have in that? I have a light assembly that I may put in sometime, but it doesn’t have a bulb.

The underhood light has a short dimension to accomidate the clear cover over the bulb. I tried several different lengths but most would not fit under the cover. I purchased a back up LED from Amazon that was close to the needed length and removed the magnifier . Workes very well and is very bright. The link is:

How easily does the magnifier come off?

The stock bulb is a 561. I'm thinking about adding 2 of these. along with an led as Chris linked. The strips look like they would fit nicely just above the hood prop angling towards the engine. I think the stock bulb is 12.4w and the 3 LEDs I mentioned are 14.5w total. I think the circuit should handle that.

The magnifier was not easy to get off of mine. I thought I was going to have to break it to get it off, but it was just being stubborn.
