Double DIN Install

Wow, that's a great picture for such a cheap camera. I like the camera location too.

Does it have backup sensors that warn you when you get close to an object?
Nope, but supposedly the Joying HU can make use of a proximity sensor. I'll try to do some research on it, but my Mandarin is pretty sketchy.

Haha, that made me laugh. It would be a cool feature though.

I actually did this same upgrade about a month ago - with the same ATOTO head unit. It's a little more work on a 97-02, but it fits great and looks really factory.

I kind of see what you mean about not having physical buttons but not too bad. I do plan on getting the steering wheel remote though. I'm a little spoiled by having steering wheel controls in my other car. Otherwise I like the ATOTO unit. it works great for the price. The screen is a little hard to see in the sun though.

Did you have to trim your aftermarket bezel to fit around the Joying, or did it just fit that perfectly?

I'm looking at doing this mod, but the weird sizes of these units have me worried.
I did have to remove about 2-3 mm from the bezel to get it to fit. It wasn't too much trouble with a wide file.

What did you have to do differently on the 97-02?

I think some kind of physical controls are a must, I've been spoiled by the steering wheel in my WK2.

The screen on the joying isn't much better that the atoto in direct sunlight. It shouldn't be too much of an issue now since the top is back on for winter. I started using Poweramp to play music instead of the stock player since I can just swipe blindly at the screen to change songs.

Prior to 03 the stereo mounts were the old Chrysler style - the unit was held in by one screw on the top right side, and a second screw on the bottom on the left corner. The newer jeeps (and the 2-din units) have 2 screws on each side, top and bottom. So I had to fabricate a couple aluminum brackets that had to be riveted into the dash cavity to create a place to screw the unit into.

Also, the original TJ had an ashtray that was part of the black face piece that was replaced with the double-din version, so since the new one didn't support that I had to replace the switch panel with an 03 one that filled that entire space. The HVAC control had to be pushed out about 1/4" because the shape of the faceplate is slightly different, and not all of the mounting clips lined up, so I'm adding a couple screws at the bottom to secure the faceplate in place.

The company that makes the faceplate has a brief write up on their product page here: http://www.custominstallparts.com/store/p246/1997-2002_Jeep_Wrangler_Dash_Kit.html

I had found more detailed write-ups as well as some pictures on a couple other Jeep forums.

Glad you mentioned about Poweramp. I was wondering which music player app you used, and if it was different from the default one installed on the ATOTO. The default one has a few minor quirks that I'd like to not have to deal with. Also, does the Joying have a compass and/or gyroscope sensors on board? I would like to have a good full screen compass app and inclinometer, but my head unit doesn't support those apps because it doesn't have the proper sensors. Still, very happy for the money.

That's some great info to have here.

Poweramp is leaps and bounds above the stock player.

The joying doesn't have any compass or gyro sensors, but the Torque app and other apps can show a compass that extrapolates your heading from GPS.

Wish i could of got that console here i did manage to squeeze in an Apple carplay head unit using a Ford double din adapter i cut into my bezel and sealed with a fine line of silicone, also have a cheap ebay camera hooked up to the reverse switch that looks at my tow bar so i can see the hitch when i back up. Other screen is a rear view camera cut into the top of the roof also ebay cos i cant see anything with my full size spare filling the rear window.

This has been such a great upgrade. I know the anti tech tj people here probably scoff at this, but having a backup cam is really nice. With a 35 inch spare, gas cans on either side of the tire and a tray above the tire my view behind me is pretty small. It's also nice to be able to use it as a rear view mirror while driving with a cooler above the spare tire. I'm looking for a spot to mount a front cam to use while rock crawling.

I have purchased the double Din bezel. I am in the process of finding a good Apple Car Play unit and may it installed this summer. I have a Pioneer NEX unit in my truck so I will probably go with another one. The Pioneer is easy to use.

I may wait for new 5G technology units come on the market. Not sure if it will effect radios since 5G comes from phones. I like the back up camera in my truck. Not sure a back up camera will have he same effect in a Jeep.

I am not totally convinced I need this upgrade. Enjoying the places my Jeep can take me is probably more important. Maybe being disconnected from technology is more important. I do drive in the urban environment, technology can be helpful there. I guess just because you have tech does not mean you have to use it all the time. Talked myself into it!

For the people that scoff at this upgrade. All I can say is the $1700 that I had to pay to fix the minivan that I backed my 35" tire into on a snowy dark parking lot, would have made this mod worth while.
What my concern is, how secure is the double din? Is someone going to destroy my jeep top to get at it?

Been there before, except I backed my 35" spare up into a concrete pillar and damaged my tailgate enough to where I had to replace it. A camera would have solved this, no doubt.

Panasonic NEX are the only Apple/Android units I am aware of with a removable face plate (and a nice back-up camera feature). I looked into this a little bit ago and personally wouldn't put one in my Jeep unless it were removable. I also looked into covers as I want to protect it from the elements when possible (I leave off the top and doors as much as weather allows). Didn't find anything, but I am thinking of fashioning up some cover with a mixture of plastic sheets glued and/or riveted together with foam and/or rubber as a debris and water-resistant gasket. From the look of the aftermarket double-din bezel it seems flat enough of the sides that I may be able to affix some magnets on the back side for the cover to be able to attach to (and maintain a clean look).

At least that's my plan for whenever I can set aside funds for it, money is tight and cool as CarPlay and a camera would be I would be remiss to spend hundreds of dollars on this before I spend it underneath the Jeep. A man can dream though!
