What the heck is this thing?

If that's used while driving on a rough trail it'd be very hard to keep a steady hand
But since it is a knob you turn, you can grip it tight and regardless of how rough the ride it will hold a steady rpm until you twist it. But either will work well. The vernier style definitely allows finer, more precise control.

Do you have an under hood photo at the firewall ?
I just went to Amazon and ordered one.

I have had hand throttles on several jeeps, including both bicycle shifters and a vernier hand throttle control. One member's supposition that if a vernier control is used for driving on a rough trail that it would be difficult to keep a steady hand for adjustment is completely unfounded.

A vernier hand throttle works well both on rough trails and for elevating rpms for winch/onboard air use. So does a bicycle shifter. It is simply a matter of personal preference and budget. I prefer the vernier control to a bicycle shifter because no matter how well a shifter might work it still looks like a cobbled together Rube Goldberg device.

YMMV

PS - If one has the budget there is also the option of an electronic throttle control. I am not sure if these are still available because I didn't get a response when I inquired about them last year, but they are currently listed on the website:

The Vernier knob is not a plug and play thing, more of a DIY.
Some things you will need to do:
Make a cable stop. I made mine from a stainless 1/2” cap screw, I drilled it with 1/4” all the way through and halfway through on the head side with a bit just big enough for the cable sheath. Mount this before you cut the sheath down. Pull the cable out first you don’t cut it till last. Mount it where the cruise control cable goes with a jam nut either side.
Buy a factory return spring and take the spring off carefully enlarge the through hole so your cable easily slips through. The ball pivot was already on my TB. I don’t remember the PN#.
Get some cable stops. I used two. Give yourself enough cable to pass through and put stops on with a little bit of play and cut the excess off .

I've got a Vernier knob mounted on my Kilby/York bracket. I use it to control the RPM for the OBA, OBW and the winch. I don't have a hand throttle since I have 5:1 Atlas, slipping the clutch is a non-issue.

Yeh I just use it on trails that are a rougher ride to keep me from blipping the throttle every bump and winching. I’m fairly low too with 4:1 and 5.38’s

Thanks. I’ve been looking for info on these for another project that I’m working on.

If anybody is looking at doing a hand throttle it is much easier if you actuate the gas pedal like a JK, at least mine was. There is no need to go in the engine compartment.
