So in August I bought my first jeep ever. Our family had been looking at getting a tow vehicle for our Motorhome for some time but couldn't make up our mind. On a trip out to Sedona and then the Grand Canyon we decided to do the Pink Jeep Tour on Broken Arrow trail and my 6 year old daughter was amazed. We did a lot of Fun things on this vacation but when it was all done we all agreed the Jeep Tour was our favorite part. Long story short 3 weeks later we owned a jeep.

I originally set out looking for a YJ thinking I liked the look and wanted to keep my budget low. It was only by lucky circumstance that I come across a local family selling a 2006 Rubicon for cheap . They were the second owner and kept it in their garage. When viewing the jeep for the first time it was very obvious this jeep had never seen dirt in its life. The owners didn't even know what lockers were. They clearly didn't know what a gem they had in their possession. I locked up the deal the first day on the market knowing it wouldn't last a week.

The best part of the deal for me was that the jeep was 100% stock which meant I could build this up the way I wanted. It has high mileage but the engine purrs and absolutely no signs of any oil leak. Even the clutch feels like butter. So 6 months now into ownership and the jeep is just so awesome. It runs like a dream and steering is solid and tight. I've spent the last 6 months wheeling it on weekends in stock forum and this jeep is so capable. I connected with 2 local clubs close to me (San Diego Jeep Club) and (Temecula Jeep and Off-Roaders) and find myself on runs frankly I don't think I should be doing and every time the jeep just does everything I ask it to do. Because of these runs I'm doing more frequently I got the itch to upgrade. I just completed a suspension lift with tires. I'll post a before and after.

I have tried to photo document everything along the way and have spent endless amount of hours researching every move I've made. My goal will be to share the details and photos of everything I did and why I did them. This is my first posting so I hope I do this right!!! Here is the most recent picture, just completed the suspension lift yesterday.

I have spent the last 4 months obsessing over ever detail on how I wanted to approach this build. My first real decision I had to make was what size tire to go with. I really had to check my ego when making this decision because almost every person I would wheel with was in a JK rocking 35's to 37's. Everyone kept telling me I would regret only going to 33's. The thing was I agreed 33's looked a little small on a 4 door JK but then every TJ I saw on 33's looked amazing. The other thing I started to realize was that I was doing 80% of what the big boys were doing and I was in stock form (Lockers are the best).

So with tires comes wheels. When i was surfing the internet looking at 10,000 pics of TJ's on 33's I noticed every time I saw a silver TJ using the stock Rubicon Moab wheels I would take notice. Because I loved the look and the idea of saving money I choose to shop tires in the 16" range. Going 33" and sticking with 16" wheels limits the playing field greatly. Almost every tire is a light truck load E tire. Since I loved the ride of my jeep in stock form which was Load E I choose not to go down the rabbit hole of obsessing over needing Load C. Plenty of other things to obsess about, lol.

I did need to address the issue of stock wheel backspacing so I went with 1.25" G2 wheel spacers. I know this is a hot debate but I took every possible step and precaution to install these properly. Since this jeep isn't a daily driver and I do a decent amount of rock crawling in Southern California I decided to go with Mickey Thompson MTZ P3's. They were one of about 4 tires I was looking at (Toyo MT, Nitto Ridge Grappler, Duratrac's) but I got a $200 off and no sales tax deal on the Mickey Thompson so I decision was made. I'm in love with with the aggressive side lug look and they ride pretty quite for a MT tire.

Since my lift was just finished yesterday I can't provide any real quality feedback yet but damn I love the look!!!

What lift did you go with? Are those jk shocks or Rocksports?

I'll do a in depth write up probably tomorrow on my suspension but I ended up blending two companies for my lift. JKS and Rancho.

Springs are 3" dual rate coils from JKS
Shocks are Rancho rs5000x (I was convinced based on every post on this forum)
Rancho adjustable control arms with their new D2 flex bushing
JKS adjustable front track bar
JKS sway bar links with disco's in the front

I'm very interested in this combo. The springs in particular. Can you give me actually lift measurements after the spings install? I want to know if you actually got a true 3" of lift, or more, or less.

I have good news and bad news. Good news is I have lots of pics and post install measurements. Bad news is I made the cardinal sin and forgot to get pre-install #'s.

I can get any measurement you need as it currently sits post install if you need something more.

When I measured the new springs against the old ones I was getting about 3.25" over stock. Keep in mind the stock springs had 140,000 miles on them.

Hope all this helps. Happy to provide more feedback as the jeep gets used more.

After deciding that 33's were going to be my tire of choice I now had to figure out how I wanted to fit them on the jeep. I knew from research that I needed 3" of lift to achieve my goal but also that there are many ways to go about it. I gave the OME / JKS lift from DPG a serious look based on its high praise here on the forum boards but ultimately 2 things stopped me. One was simply the body lift which I was never really sure about from solely a personal opinion and the second was the fact that I needed new bushings on my control arms so why not just get all new beefier arms.

I also knew I didn't what to go 4" high preferring instead to try and achieve a low COG lift. This left me in the 3-3.5" range. I wanted 3 things really, good quality, complete kit, and affordably while still keeping the first 2 wants. So again after lots of research I was down to just 2, Metalcloak 3.5 or the Rubicon Express 3.5. I convinced myself after going back and forth many times that I was going with Metalcloak. I put it all in my shopping cart prepared to spend around $2300 but by the time shipping and tax hit the cart I was looking at $2650. I paused and didn't pull the trigger. I also had a problem of not wanting to wait the lead time they were quoting of 3 weeks. Waiting for one of their free shipping events would have helped but again I didn't want to wait any longer.

So now after wanting Metalcloak I couldn't get excited about Rubicon Express anymore. I felt all this tireless research was making me educated enough that I decided to think about piecing the kit together myself. Since tons of people on this forum swear by the Rancho rs5000x shock I started there. While researching Rancho I got really excited about their new adjustable control arms with the D2 flexible bushing. I kept trying to find reviews on them from TJ owners but they seemed new enough nobody had any feedback yet. I looked at this as a challenge to get them, review them, and share my experiences.

I ended up finishing the build with JKS because I always knew I wanted their quicker disconnects and adjustable track bar, they are the gold standard it seems like. Again like finding the Rancho control arms, while doing research on JKS components I came across their 3" dual rate coils. I looked for reviews but again they were newer to market so another opportunity to get them, review them, and share my experiences.

So at this point I decided I would be a 2 company build and support these companies proudly. Most of my suspension components were bought through Morris 4x4 using discount codes of 10% and free shipping. My entire lift ended up costing me around $1800 including a JKS steering stabilizer for good measure.

Parts List:

3" JKS (JSPEC) dual rate coils
Rancho rs5000x shocks
Rancho adjustable control arms (6). I kept my front upper arms stock for now (just being cheap, haha)
JKS extended legth sway bar links (front are quick disconnect)
JKS brake line extension brackets / rear track bar relocation bracket
Hockey pucks for bump stops (I'll explain later)
JKS steering stabilizer

I had window decals made for both JKS and Rancho. I just sort of like rocking decals, its the Nascar fan in me. Also placed Mickey Thompson decals over my Jeep Logo. I think I'll limit my decals to those 3 brands, we'll see.

I'm lacking in the mechanical skills department so all along I was planning to have my lift installed. Between jeep club members offering to help and again all the research I was digging up on suspensions I found confidence to do the install in the garage. This decision turned out to be extremely rewarding an a nice cost savings. Of course the cost saving just got reallocated to buying tools and one nice upgrade......new steering components!!!

So I wanted the Currie steering but didn't have the funds so I focused in on ordering the Crown HD steering kit. Things got a little gray here for me because I was hearing it was a all in one complete kit upgrading to the ZJ tie rod but it always seemed to get poor reviews on the retail sites that were selling it. Conversely just buying all the Moog parts and piecing together the ZJ conversion got really high praise on the forum so I went that route. Man I'm happy with the beef of the upgrade. I went with the draglink replacement also just because my jeep had high mileage and I wanted to refresh everything.

Looks good so far, nice mild build!

You'll have to post your initial and long term reviews of the JKS J-Spec lift.

A lot of people always ask about it, but it seems no one has any real world experience with it. I'm sure your opinion on the matter would be beneficial to people in the future who are looking for info on it.

I came here looking for feedback on this lift and found out quickly nobody had much info on it. It was sort of reason to get it so I could share my experiences and contribute to this forum.

Looks good! Don't forget to paint all that new Moog stuff or it'll rust in a hurry!!

Thanks, definitely not ideal to paint it already installed but I ran out of time with all the rain we have been getting and my install garage party came in a hurry. I'll get it painted here in the next couple of weeks!

I noticed you didn't paint the steering components...Any particular reason?

Jeep looks great, BTW. I'm curious on your spring selection too. Would like to know how they ride.
