Limits to operating angles?

This post by @Jerry Bransford reminded me of something I've been wondering about for a while.

Here's a pic of a guy with a Jeep (built by mrblaine) that was not designed as a low COG vehicle. Will many get their Jeeps tipped over as far as is shown here? Nope. Did his flop/tip-over after this photo was taken? Nope. Was the camera tilted to make it look more tipped over than it really was? Nope. :)

This is me in my previous TJ on an exceptionally tough section of trail called the Gatekeeper in Doran Canyon SoCal. Nope my TJ didn't roll and I was able to drive unassisted out of that situation.

Aside from being amazed by the mad driving skills, 🤘 I'm wondering if there are limits to how far you can pitch or roll your Jeep before some of the crucial fluids stop doing what they're supposed to do. Is there a point where oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, or coolant stop circulating? And if so, how long can you keep running beyond the limits before something stops working or is damaged?

How about other things like getting air in the brake lines because the brake fluid in the master cylinder is no longer where it needs to be? Or gear oil for the diffs slopping off to one side?

Or can you basically keep running your Jeep as long as the tires are still on the ground?

The angles that we can drive at without rolling/flopping are fine for the engine, brakes, etc.. Incidentally not many would say my driving skills are anything but basic. @mrblaine once described them as "like driving by braille" and I doubt they have improved since then lol. :)

Thanks, Jerry! I guess that's one more reason that Jeeps are awesome vehicles!

And if you can do the things we've seen in those pictures without rolling or flopping and drive yourself out of those spots without being recovered, then you've got my respect!

We've been on many waterfalls where if we stopped for very long with the engine running and the check gauges light has come on due to low oil pressure.
 
Anyone use an accumulator? How long will they provide oil pressure?
An accumulator will only provide pressure based on the volume of the reservoir. In a running 4.0 with a 1 gallon reservoir at 30 psi, it would only take seconds to put that amount of oil into the system and then it has to have a place to go which would over fill the engine a fair bit.

Better would be a dry sump set up which is a lot of expense and complexity to solve a problem that only happens rarely.

Interesting. Sounds like that's more than a few minutes. What did you do after the CEL went on? Continue driving? Or turn off the engine and winch over?

It doesn't take long for the light to come on. I trust that the 4.0 is pretty robust and a few minutes of low oil pressure won't hurt it.

Would lifters ticking be a good indicator of oil pressure too low?

@mrblaine do you run Jeeps with stock oil systems at the usual level...stock full line on the dipstick?
