PCM failing?

Hey guys, I'm looking for some help/advice. I've got an 06 4.0L Auto TJ that has been having some issues for a little while now. The first issue I noticed was the hard shift from 1st to 2nd. After researching it seems to be the PCM that is is the issue because I could reset the battery and it would go away for a bit and only happens when it's hot out. Then recently it started having performance issues. First while driving on the highway it lost acceleration and when I try to accelerate it just revs basically. I got off the highway and was able to drive fine at speeds under 55mph. So I stopped to get the check engine light check. It suggested to get the PCM reprogrammed and the code was P0344 for the camshaft position sensor. So I purchased a mopar camshaft position sensor and all was good for another week. Then it started doing the same thing with the same code. I got then got the PCM reprogrammed based on the TSB 18-015-09. The check engine light was still on when I picked it up but after driving about 100 miles it went off for a day. Then while accelerating at around 25-35mphs it did the same thing it did on the highway. I went to get the lights checked out again and this time it has P0344, P0218, P0714. I went to autozone first then advance and advance has a nicer scanner so the other codes may have been there before. Either way, it is still throwing those codes and from time to time I have the acceleration issue. I'm wondering if the PCM is screwed and is what is causing all these codes or if I have multiple things going on? Should I take it to the dealer and have them diagnosis the issues or just purchase a PCM and go from there? Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated!

That is what actually lead me to thinking the PCM needs to be replaced but with the P0344 code I'm unsure if it could be related.

I'm not entirely sure how to diagnose a bad PCM. From what I've gathered reading stuff over the years, it seems to be that when you have certain codes that just will not go away, it's often linked to a faulty PCM.

I've heard you can send your PCM off to places like FS1 where they can see if it's repairable, but I think that's only from a hardware point of view, not software.

I don't mess with stuff like this as it's too complicated. For things like this I would take it to your dealer, or any specialty Jeep shop you can find that has a good track record with PCM diagnostics (which you can ask them about over the phone).

The P0344 won't go away but there is also still performance issues. Every dealer I've called here doesn't even know the PCM's have been discontinued so I'm cautious to take it there.

We are on similar journeys... Just going to share my experience with "FS1" (flagship one, fs1inc.com)...

I phoned them up about a re-manned PCM because they were a little cheaper. I spoke with two women - both were super rude. I figured it was just their answering service, so I wrote the 'admin' email listed on their site to let them know about it - but never heard back.. That made me suspicious, so I looked up their reviews and BBB rating and complaints - and wow are they bad...

The most common complaint is customers getting a bad computer, then trying to return it. FS1 has the customer ship the unit back, then won't honor the refund because of when the unit arrived to them via mail - that date is outside their refund window. They don't go by when the unit was sent, like all other companies.

So no one can get a refund on a faulty part - only store credit (isn't that convenient) - and you can only do that exchange once (from a YT video about them, so not confirmed). ..That's super scammy.

Have a look:
https://www.bbb.org/us/ny/lynbrook/...parts/flagship-one-inc-0121-136557/complaintshttps://reviews.birdeye.com/flagship-one-inc-149438559399200
——-

There's a place in Florida that was super nice and answered all my questions. Ecuteam.com. They are a little more expensive than FS1 - but not as expensive as a lot of other places.

This is important -> The guy at ECU Team explained that 05-06 PCMs are filled with a gel to help make them shock-proof - but that also makes them non-servacible. So ECU Team takes everything out and replaces everything with all new parts - new board, everything - then they program it and ship it to you.

They stated places like FS1 aren't doing that with the 05-06 PCMs... They are just cleaning up a junk-yard computer then programing it - if it takes the program then they sell it as re-manned. ...That means those computers could be at the end of their wear-cycle and ready to break shortly after your refund window is up - that also explains why so many are trying to return their PCM to FS1.

ECU Team warranties their stuff completely (I'm sure others do too).

I didn't buy one of their computers - but I was very impressed with the service, depth of knowledge and warranty - to such a degree that I want to pass it on.

I appreciate the info. I will look into ECU Team. If I do purchase one I was thinking of trying one from wranglerfix.com mentioned in one of the posts above.

Hey, I hadn't checked out wranglerfix.com - I just opened their site and noticed a few things..

The "We aren’t a junk yard jumping, attitude giving ECM company!" quote from them probably refers to FS1.

The "There is no core return necessary as the PCMs ARE NOT REBUILDABLE!" quote confirms what that ECU Team guy was saying.

Interesting!

All of these codes are related to sensors on the transmission hump connected to the same harness and I think relying on a very precise voltage reference to operate. The code is also for an intermittent signal. Something that could easily be caused by a poor ground or damaged harness in this area. While it could be the PCM I see that as a last resort after you have exhausted all your other options. A short search on the internet I found this for P0344:

Typically the causes for this code are:
Intermittent open in the power supply circuit to the camshaft position sensor
Intermittent short to ground in the power supply circuit to the camshaft position sensor
Intermittent open in the ground circuit to the camshaft position sensor
Intermittent open in the signal circuit to the camshaft position sensor
Intermittent short to 5 volts in the signal circuit to the camshaft position sensor
Intermittent short to ground in the signal circuit to the camshaft position sensor
Camshaft Position Sensor tone ring damage
Occasionally-Crankshaft Position Sensor producing intermittent signals

Just suggesting you be really sure it isn't one of the common things before you go to the next level with the PCM.

Nice "P".

To wit, my issue is a never ending P2096 / P2094 with a TSB, worked in a different thread. I was just here to explain my experience with FS1 - they sucked.

I would caution you from purchasing from ECU Team. Please do your research and look into the company. They were previously doing business under Module Gods which has now changed to Automodule Gods and there is a history of now inactive short lived business ventures with the owners. New name means no more old problems. Regardless of what they call themselves, the warranty they provide is useless as is the service after the sale. I speak from personal experience and numerous failed "new" modules from them.

Oh - really? I knew about Module Gods - I thought they were the same company using two different names to appeal to different markets (standard "ECU Team" and racing/tuning "Module Gods"). That's how their sites are set up too. It's not that uncommon (two divisions of one company).

Are you sure about the names - aren't they both still open for business (you said "new name means no old problems"). It looks like they're both still up and in business.

No biggie - I don't have a dog in the fight - but I might have to buy a computer from them some day - what bad experiences did you have with ECU Team?

Who did you end up having a good experience with?

Couldn’t agree more, was going to say something similar but you said it even better.

OP, I will also mention that it’s an 06 and could be OPDA related. See the following thread, in particular the post of mine I take you to.
