My son's YJ lost just it's muffler some time last year and seems to be OK without it. I don't see me doing it to the TJ though.
It does let some exhaust fumes in but that's because of dreaded rust holes.

Man, I'm just the opposite...I spend lots of time in the woods, and enjoy seeing critters. I want my TJ as quiet as a sewing machine. I'm not quite there yet, but close. My hunting partner can hear the 4Lo gear noise before the exhaust when I come to pick him up off his hunting stand.

If loud sounds are what you’re after then just unbolt that muffler, install a small turn down and see how long you’re comfortable with that.

In all honesty, when I was that age and younger I liked loud. These days, the last thing I would want to drive is a loud vehicle. I guess I'm becoming boring as I get older, haha.

Just get the cheapest flow through muffler or glass pack you can find, not only will it sound better but will probably run better too. Also no exhaust fumes.

I think @Vasq just installed a turbo muffler that he claims is actually too loud for him. Maybe he'll share what brand and model it is, so you too can enjoy the rumble...
It sounds like shit. It drones. Completely obnoxious. And I'm a person that doesn't mind exhaust noise.
And mufflers are required equipment at many offroad driving areas and events. Sometimes its for noise abatement and sometimes to help prevent wildfire. Mufflers aren't necessarily designed as spark arrestors but they do help. To pass tech inspection at one big event I attend each year you must have a muffler on your Jeep/ truck/ buggy and it can't be a "glass pack or any straight through muffler that does not include spark arrestor certification". They claim that is a US Forest Service requirement for ALL vehicles.

It might just be my preference but I don't thing the 4.0 has a good exhaust note. I had a full aftermaket exhaust on a previous TJ that was louder than stock. It just sounded like sh*t.
