Hi everyone, it's my first time posting here and I've been reading a lot of the threads for what size lifts to do for a 33x12.5 inch tire. I've been quoted that a 2.5 inch lift kit should do just fine, and my main concern is that I just don't want any tire rub if I fully cut the wheel. I am not going to be doing very much offloading, and I'm looking for a little more personalized advice on my lift choice! Thanks!

You want about 4" total lift to run a 33" tire with no rubbing but you will need added bump stop.

The zone combo lift is a good entry level lift. You may need to space the transfer case skid down a bit to avoid driveline vibrations.

Do you have a budget in mind for the lift?

A 2.5" suspension lift coupled with a 1.25" body lift is adequate for 33's. The body lift will give you the needed clearance so the tires don't destroy your fenders at full stuff, otherwise you'll need to add more bump stop extension, which lessons your up travel. Up travel is important for better ride quality. You'll also need to consider re-gearing and bigger brakes. If we knew the specifics of your TJ we might be able to give further advise.

I have around $1,000 budget in mind for the lift itself, not including installation. My TJ is a 2001 4.0L Sport. I don't think I am very interested in regearing for my first go-around.

Oh I completly agree. And I understand money doesn't grow on trees.

Exactly why my jeep is still on 33's and not 35's. Also why I don't have a body lift with TT, raised gas tank skid, and outboarded shocks. If only I could find that money tree.

There is a lot to doing a build incrementally too. Next step for me is likely the body lift which will hurt my ego a bit because I'm not a fan of them in general and I'm happy with my current lift but it's the next step in the evolution.

The small body lifts people put on TJ's aren't that bad and I completely understand the why. It just reminds me of the old 3" body lifts people put on their pickups that looked terrible.
IMO, anything under 1.5 is ok.

The gap on the back of the tub can be fixed with some simple plate between the body and the frame. (behind it)

We have ways of making that gap go away. ;)

Put very simply, with your limited budget a 31 inch tire goal is more ideal if you want the Jeep done “right.”

Agreed. Running 33" tires without re-gearing will make you wish you had. My original gears were 3.73 with a 4" lift, 1" body lift and the shifting was a pita. If I knew then what I know now I would have gone with 31" tires along with reduced lift. Decided to stick with 33" tires but had it re-geared to 4.56. Stick with this site for the best advice and honestly assess what you intend to do with your Jeep within your budget constraints. You will find that a slightly altered, or even factory stock, Jeep will accomplish more than what the average driver expects. If you are off roading you need to consider the type of off roading. Running gravel fire trails will require a different set up than going over more difficult terrain. Now you enter the world of lockers and enhanced traction which costs money.

I have 31's with a 2.5 inch suspension lift. With sway bars disconnected I get full travel/no rub. Have barricade fenders, when flexed 33's would hit for sure. My First vehicle ever was a CJ5, you are in for so much fun!

I had 31" tires on the stock suspension. I rubbed at full lock. Installed a 4" Rockjock lift and put on 33s. Correction: I have bump stops. I was thinking of steering stops. Forgive me...didn't have coffee yet.
