This past Christmas, I got a new Kenwood head unit for my Jeep. It was long overdue since my 15 year old Alpine head unit was getting tard. So, I decided to upgrade my stereo system a bit. Most of the components I had in the Jeep were old tech audio, but worked fine for my tastes. I had two very large amps mounted under the driver seat, one running a subwoofer, and the other boosting power to the dash and pod speakers. I decided it was time to simplify. My old setup....

I upgraded the speakers several years ago, and they still sounded fine, so I left them alone. I installed 5.25" coaxials in the dash with the adapter brackets, and 6.5" coaxials in the pods...

I fabbed a custom enclosure in the center console for a slim line 8" subwoofer using the existing console storage enclosure(didn't have the factory sub option).

While I had the interior apart, I thought it would be a good time to sound deaden the tub a bit, so I ordered some product from our favorite shopping site...

I picked up a under seat storage box from a fellow jeeper, so my reasons were two fold for moving the amps.

So with my trusty roll of sound deadening material, I got busy...

I re-wired everything, got the interior back together and low and behold, the new stereo worked, minus a subwoofer. The problem I had was finding room for the amp. I fabbed up a mount to mount the amp under the steering column, but my old amp was just to big, so my next purchase will be a smaller mono block amp that will fit in that location. Until then, I will have to suffer without bass for a while. More to come once I get the amp. Thanks for looking.

Wow, job well done! I'm impressed.

Admittedly, I'm not much of an audio guy in the TJ, but only because I've usually got the top and doors off.

My only suggestion to you would be don't go wading through any deep water, haha!

Looks good. I like tunes while driving. I installed a new deck, speakers, and amp in mine. I used a small Clarion amp that I was able to zip tie to the factory stereo bracket in the dash. Keeps it off the floor and safe from the elements.

Sounds decent and is loud enough without distortion even running the bikini top in the summer. Could use some bass, however.

The 8" slim line sub I installed fills quite well, even with the top off flying down the freeway.

This will be the amp I'm getting to run the sub.

That was the other reason I decided to get he amps off the floor. I learned my lesson a while back.

I am interested in using my non-sub bin as a sub enclosure too. A couple of questions - did you have any trouble fitting the white enclosure back into the console with the Dynamat? Is the white bin only secured by the screws at the top and the screws around the speakers or did you bolt it down similar to the stock enclosure? I noticed you have some wood blocking so I am assuming that you made that a connection point too.

Anything you would have done different or any tips?

The white inner enclosure was attached to the outer console by 4 rivets inside the console lid, then a screw on each side towards the bottom of the outer shell. I drilled out the rivets, remove the inner white enclosure, then reinstalled with sheet metal screws after making the modifications. There was plenty of room even with the boom mat to stick the inner enclosure back. The wood blocks you see helped fill some gaps the white enclosure had, plus I had to strengthen the speaker hole area to give it more rigidity for the sub. So far it's held up quite well and sounds great.
