What's needed to turn my LJ into a near Rubicon?

Because 2.72:1 is the perfect reduction in sand and mud....
Just like 4:1 is the perfect reduction on the rocks....
and 4HI is perfect on a trail.....

otherwise why have a 2 speed transfer case ??
if you want to compromize in mud and sand, have at 'er.
me, I see no need for 4:1 cuz I never need to climb a waterfall.
But I do cross a lot of sandy beaches. and 2.72 would be perfect.

I really wish people would listen to what the guy posting is asking and give a truthful answer rather than defending their choices at all costs. Jeep makes 2 transfer cases for a reason. Neither one is inferior or better than the other but each is designed for a specific use. Pick the best one for your wheeling.

On the Dana 44 front axle, the reason it is on the Rubi is cuz all locked up crawling over rocks it is possible to send all the torque to one front tire. The reason nothing else comes with matching front and rear axles is cuz regular 4x4s..... since they were first made only send all the torque to the rear axle in 2WD. In 4WD most every 4x4 out there sends 50% of the torque to the front axle in 4WD. Hence the Dana 35/Dana 30, Dana 60/Dana 44, Dana 70/Dana 60 in virtually every 4x4 for the past 60 years.

Rock crawling comes with some specific loads not common in any other 4 wheeling.
What is the ratio in 4 high with the 241 and what is the ratio in 4lo with the 231?

Speed and some wheel spin is your friend in mud.
I was just thinking, well, I might! And I agree, I have done that some. The only problem is when forward or backward progress stops, switch and go the other way, but is that ideal in 4H or is it better to have more torque in 4L for the back and forth situation?

I’ve found for the mud up here the 241 works well, IE it’s on par with the 231, neither will get much if any furthe than the other, I usually just use a higher gear in my transmission. But in the sand I don’t use low range much to at all where as the 231 will. Again not a big enough difference for me to want to swap mine out. In the snow I like the 241 same on all of the trails up here, but again my friends with 231’s go everywhere I go. Your driving style just naturally adjusts to what ya have and ya make it work. Bottom line is that I like both cases and wouldn’t swap one out for the other no matter what case I had

no high would be 1 to 1
Thank you. That's what I thought, but I was confused by his post.

Could consider a HP30 build also.

I almost did the HP30 but went with Currie Rockjock’s w/ARB’s instead

A Rubicon in 4H is the same as any other ordinary TJ in 4H.
That's what I figured, and I don't really prefer wheeling in 4H unless I'm trying to cover some distance to get to another obstacle or climbing sand.

On mine, I didn't start to find 4H useable off road until after the regear. Even then, I mostly stick with 4L even with the 241.

I appreciate all the comments. I plan to use the Jeep on mountain trails, no true rock crawling, sand or mud. Just steep climbs, occasional stream crossings, and very rough roads.

It's on 33" tires which is as big as I want to go.

Sounds like I'm good with the 231 T-case and Dana 30 upfront.

I'll add the lockers for sure. I suppose that would be the time to re-gear the differentials? Front and rear diffs have the same gear ratios, right? So I could go from stock 3.73 to 4.10 in both?

I had to go into a swamp in my Rubi basically to retrieve our 06 Rubi my son loaned that got bottomed out on a big log .

I have KO 2’s ....and I was in no position to get stuck as I was the recovery guy . Man you have to hammer on it . It’s fun, scary, stupid , and a great way to smack a tree and destroy the driveline with mud.

What’s the point ? First , above post is dead right , 2 , kids don’t need to loan kids Jeeps, and lastly , given a choice , I’ll take a Rubi....you can always shift up and get through mud, lockers can make all the difference, and you can still crawl anything. A 241 can do what a 231 and a 241 can do. A 231 can’t .

Unless your 231 has 4:1 low range...
