Safari top question

Hello everybody.

I just joined the site, and would like to ask a question about
Safari Tops. I have a 2003 TJ, and I have removed the roll bar
padding and covers years ago. My question is, will the top
fit tightly around the metal sport cage, or will it be too
loose without the roll bar padding. The safari top I am
interested in, is the Bestop safari top.

It should fit just fine, because I am pretty sure the straps are adjustable. Don't quote me on that, but I believe that's the case. I'll wait for someone to respond who has a Safari top.

They don't depend on the padding to be tight. The right safari and bikini tops have the same hard rubber edges the soft top does that snap into the door surround over the front doors which keeps that part tight, and the rear of it is tightened with straps.

BTW, good choice on the Bestop. Definitely the best you can get as far as tops go!

Considering a safari mesh top. I see you say it buckles into the top over the doors. My question...I have a hardtop. No hardware for a softtop. I know there are notches an whatnot in the padding over the doors. Is this what you're talking about the safari top fastening to? Trying to decide on best top or jtop that doesn't require a header.

The Bestop safari top has plastic side flaps over the front doors that tuck into a channel in the soft top door surrounds. The also come, I believe, with Velcro straps that will attach them to the roll bar if you don't have door surrounds. The top will not be as tight with the Velcro straps, though.

I can confirm this. I ran a Bestop safari top for awhile without the door surrounds. It does work, but I definitely recommend using the surrounds. 1. It fits ALOT better with them and 2. The puddle that will form when it rains will run outside the door instead of inside the door onto your lap.

I've never actually ran a Safari top, I only run my Spiderwebshade mesh top. It takes all of 5 minutes to put on (maybe less) and doesn't require any hardware other than the bungee type cables it comes with.
