Ok I took my 98 2.5l manual to a mechanic because I simply couldn't figure it out..at first they said it was my distributor cap and rotary button so they replaced and then my catalytic converter was shot ,so they replaced that and the muffler along with the upstream and downstream o2 sensors and that still hasnt fixed it...he said compression and all was good . So today to told me that he checked the timing and said that it was at 16 and needs or should be at 0, but still wasnt sure if that was it. I'm already 500 in on this and I need to figure this out. It's my daily driver . When You accelerate past like 3000 rpms or it loses power big time but will eventually get speed up but not much. When I'm coming to a stop ,like when I have the clutch pushed in it acts like it wants to die . It will also spit and sputter and what not . Any help would be greatly appreciated

If they are telling you the timing is off then that will need further investigation but a few things come to mind, that is fuel pressure and cleaning the the throttle body idle air control.

There are several threads about cleaning the IAC on the throttle body in the resources section. Checking fuel pressure is a matter of renting a pressure tester and tapping into the test port on your fuel rail, should be close to 49 psi when running.

Not sure of your skills but do you know how to locate top dead center on cylinder one. It will help determine if the timing is off or not.

Thanks . I have tried cleaning the iac before I sent it to the mechanic. Is it possible it's bad? Should I replace it? . I'm almost positive he checked the fuel pressure and all and compression test.and my skills when it comes to the internal of engines are limited . But I usually like to tackle these things with advice but I'm stuck ..

If you can speak to the mechanic see if you can get the test results on the fuel pressure and more info on the timing issue. If the timing was off by that much I would expect a mechanic to investigate further considering you were experiencing numerous problems.

Also find out what brand O2 sensor was used as it very common for garages not to be aware of issues with Bosch sensors and our Jeeps that do not like them The preferred sensor is NTK 0r Mopar. (same thing)

Ok I will try and find out about the fuel pressure and what brand o2 sensors they used. I'm wanting to say they might have been denso or something like that but I'm gonna ask about that. So the 16 reading is out of Time pretty far?. I know he had mentioned to me sometimes the chain can stretch or broke a tooth .

If the timing is that far off I cannot imagine how he could manage diagnose anything. If they used Denso or some other off brand that can be one of your issues.

Ok I'm gonna try and find all that out..is there anything else I should ask besides the fuel pressure and what brand o2 sensors were installed?

That tends to be the sign of a sloppy timing chain, exactly what my 2.5 did.
It was the timing chain. He replaced that and the tensioner and seal and it runs great now. It must have been bad for awhile becuase I always thought I had some type of knock but it was the chain that was making the noise..he showed me were it was eating into the tensioner. Thanks for your help

Glad it worked out well, thanks for the follow up.
