What did you do to your TJ today?

Wanted to go back to stock bumpers - so found an ad on craigslist, and the gentleman agreed on $80 for both front and rear bumpers that he took off his TJ (with the plastic milk jugs still attached, mind you, that cost $20 each on eBay).

When I got there he ended up telling me to just take everything.

So off of a 2005 Rubicon I got front and rear stock bumpers, all four plastic milk jugs, 3rd brake like with the plastic risers on the bottom, factory tire carrier, and factory rear tow hook.

I hardly ever get a deal on things so I'm stoked!

His shop also was restoring a CJ (not sure what year it is):

Please share exactly what you did? Was it a spray oven cleaner - and then did you cover up the alternator, the air intake, the differential air tube; what else?

I ran the vehicle to operating temp, let cool for 15 minutes then removed the intake. I covered, with heavy duty, doubled up aluminum foil, the battery terminals, alternator, throttle body opening and the opening into the air box, and the computer connectors. I then used off the shelf spray on oven cleaner (3 cans) and basically soaked everything. It fact it looked like a big foam ball under the hood. I let that sit for about an hour. While I was waiting I cleaned up the intake.

I installed the intakeI then pressure washed everything while making sure not to force water into anything by being to close. I had to hit a couple spots againg with oven cleaner because the build-up was massive and pressured washed those spots again. Let it sit in the sun with the hood open for an hour or so to dry out then wiped down some spots.

Removed all aluminum foil and used Chemical Guys Black on Black spray and sprayed everything that is black, hoses, plastics, whatever. Let sit for a couple of hours and started her up —- no problems!

Not a one and I drive it every day. Just take extra caution where you direct high pressure water.

That's pretty intense but very thorough. I just spray simple green, wipe down the big stuff and trouble areas, the spray off with the hose. I fire it up and let it run for 15-20 minutes in the sun afterwards. Good tip on the Chem guys black. Will have to pick up a can.

Well I have gotten over my "teenage years itch" and now prefer to be as close to stock as possible. Next is deciding on either Canyon rims or 6-spoke YJ steel rims painted black or dark green. ...can't decide!

I opened a bunch of Boxes for my TJ today. This weekend is gonna be busy. New front brakes and headlight upgrade. I also removed the only bit of chrome from the ol Girl. I wouldn't say she's "murdered out" cuz I'm not a douche canoe, but it is pretty monochromatic.
