New Jeep Dog, Maybe

My son rescued a Belgian Malanois, and found out that Mom was right when it came to the size of dog to the size of his studio apt. LOL So long story short, Mom has a new dog. LOL

Would it be wrong after only a couple weeks of hubby helping you make a platform to secure the stuff in the back of the Jeep, to want it removed so you can put the seat back in? LOL Seriously though, I really don't want to put the seat back in, but I do want to take the dog sometimes. If I don't have a passenger I plan on just letting it ride up front, but if I do have a passenger I will need to have him ride in the back. Has anyone hauled their dog on top of a platform/deck? I am thinking of buying one of those nets that wrap around the roll cage, but just not sure how to make the deck more dog friendly?

What have you done to take your dog with you?

Yes! LOL This will be a true test of your hubb's patience and understanding.

I have the rear seat in still. I use the Smittybilt heavy duty webbing and seat buckles for their harnesses. They absolutely love it.

The issues I have are getting them in and out. The seat doesn't fold forward too much and it's difficult for them to jump in and out. I'd love to have some kind of deck or flooring so I could take the seat out. I would still want the seatbelts though so I would have to cut a hole in the center of it.

I like how it attaches to the drip rail, but I don't like how it looks so cheaply made.

@IPerkWVU , do you have pics of your net installed? I went to the site and the only thing I am concerned with is the back. In the one pic I see of it, it appears to not really go down too far. I do love the fact I can get it in purple and will most likely go with that one, as long as the back goes down and I can secure it. Oh, and I am looking at the one piece wrap around one. I don't need the top part of the net as I keep my top up almost all the time. With the fold back top I don't really need to put the whole top down.

Rual king, tractor supply, or any farm supply store sells 1/4 and 3/8 inch rubber mat 4 foot wide and they cut to length. I can see a purple net around your roll bar in the future LOL. alien shade and sun shade make side panels as well

First, the fact he hasn't thought to offer to remove it to make room for the dog is worrisome. there are a ton of different types of door mats that could be repurposed to fit on top and still provide comfort to the pooch. I would train the pup to be in the back at first. Using a good harness and strap to help keep him back there (along with the cargo nets or your top's side windows) first so the pup knows that is 'his' spot. Later on you could allow him up front, but if he learns that the front seat is 'his' he won't give it up when you have a human passenger (ask me how I know).

I used the Dirty Dog 4x4 pet divider to train my Heeler to stay in the backseat. Works like a charm. You could probably find a dog bed that's about the same size as the top of the deck and velcro it on top so it doesn't move, but allows it to be taken off to be cleaned and washed.

I didn't even think of the alien shade sides. I would still need a back portion though so a cargo net may be my only choices. I'll have to go look to see what the shades offer.

Yah, that is a good idea to train him to the back first. Maybe I should just make it his only spot to ride. Would probably be best in the long run.

Been doing this for 30 years.

We use a short leash so he cant get past the edge of the Jeep out the doors or over the tailgate.

Sampson loves to watch where we are going. He'll ride here for hours.

Well my Jeep interior is like new 17 years later rolling out in Toledo . I have never had a dog in her. Or let anyone smoke. Or eat in her either lol. So, I don't have any good advice for you.

I did want to say, however, that is a handsome dog. And I love pets.

My heeler has bad seperation anxiety too. So much so, i had to actually weld a kennel out of thick square tubing to keep her from escaping, lol.i know the feeling!

It was $110 a month ago when I got it. It is heavy duty webbing that nobody is tearing through. The back unclips with plastic. Kind of a pain to put all the straps on the roll bar, but it stays on year round. The soft top goes up over it no problem as does the sun shade I have on top.

Film. Pup has such anxiety that she is whining when I get the mail. It's like 10 feet past where she is allowed to come near the road. She can see me. Nothing in the way. But 10 ft away from her is too much. Luckily she is such a charmer that even the bank and doctors let her come in. Hell, I was told to bring her in and let her loose by the bank manager. She gets at least some of everybody's lunch.
After I found out about the harness and seatbelt strap thing I would never have her with just her collar holding her in the vehicle. If you go with the alien sunshade get the longer full top one. It can be used to block off the center behind the seats or even used to cover over the rear area and down the back to the tailgate to keep your pup safe. I always prefer she is up front with me (she has trained me more than I've trained her) I just wish I could figure out how to keep her safe inside with the doors off. Or at least with half doors. The Jeep is best when top is off and doors are too.

Oh boy, I'm not liking hearing of all these dogs with separation anxiety with being owned a long time. I was hoping to be able to get him over it. My hubby already told me to give him back to my son, which means he will go back to the SPCA. His anxiety isn't a bad thing during the day, he does eventually "kind of" settle down, but it is at night when I leave for work that is going to be the problem. That is when hubby is trying to sleep and can't have a dog running around barking all night.

The first night I left for work, my other dogs wouldn't stop barking at Rocky pacing back and forth and going in and out of the house (doggie door). That is what made my hubby mad. If anything, I am hoping they will not bark at him anymore now that they are kind of used to him. Bad thing is, the only way I guess I can test this out, is to leave at the time I normally leave for work, around 10.pm. Then maybe try leaving at the other time, 1am. Just sucks to have to get up at 1am just to test things, but I guess I better do it soon. I hate to have to see him go back to the SPCA, but at the same time, I don't want to piss my hubby off and end up with him sleeping at his work or what ever. Just a hard thing to try to deal with. I like the dog, but hubby has to come first. Since I am on vacation right now, Rocky has been really good and just lays down on a dog bed I have beside my bed. He doesn't make peep unless the others start barking or he hears something. I can even get up and go to the bathroom (in another section of the house) and he just lays there.

Today I was mowing the lawn and went outside the fenced yard to mow the front. He can jump almost as high as the 6 foot fence. I went and got his E collar and put it on to try to stop the jumping, but I went out the front door to go finish the yard, and he didn't do anything. LOL I guess I need to put the collar on 'before' I go out to mow next time. LOL

Haven't had our little guy in my Jeep yet but I have Dirty Dog netting. One advantage over some of the other netting is that it has buckles so you are able to access the back of the Jeep without actually taking the netting off, its super handy. It's super high quality, comes in different colours and is Canadian Made.
