What about the video in the 14th post on this thread by RaymondT that shows a guy removing the lifters, with the head still bolted on. He uses a tool that can extract the lifters. It sure looks like a Jeep 4.0.

I just watched it. And that's almost exactly how the guy in the thread I mentioned did it.
From the looks of it, and I'm no mechanic, that look very feasible - and I imagine to clean up all the sludge in those cavities, since you can't take the head off, 2 treatments of detergent in your engine should help out.
That video on the 14th post is of a Jeep 2.5 (4 cylinder) engine. A later post number 18 states on a 6 Cylinder 4.0 there is no way to remove the lifters the same way as in the video.

Perhaps, but post #18 doesn't suggest what issues he ran into. The part numbers for lifters, rocker arms, valve springs, and numerous other components are identical between the 2.5 and 4.0.

Hmm interesting. Maybe the opening is smaller on the 4.0 versus the 2.5. When the time comes I will attempt to remove them first without removing the head.
I didn't have any ticking issue but I did use atf in my oil to clean it out. I changed the oil with an stp filter and one quart of atf, ran it about three weeks, 200 miles and changed it again. And it seemed much dirtier than it would normally be after that short a period.
I did notice an almost immediate lowering of oil pressure after putting in the atf, from near 60psi to just above 40psi.

That's what I'm currently doing too. I put in a quart of Rislone a couple of days ago, soon I'm gonna drain it all out, refill it with cheaper oil and another quart or Rislone.

I did the Rislone trick last fall going into winter. That sh*t's been around longer than grandpa. The only thing I don't like about it, was it turned 10W30 into even thicker goo during the cold months. I drained it when it was 40F out and it was damn near the consistency of honey coming out. It works by thickening the oil, not cleaning anything. Probably could have done the same thing by using straight 30W
