What do you do for a day job?

Auto repair shop owner. I’ve been working in dealerships since high school and opened my own shop 7 years ago. It’s mostly repair work and a lot of power train rebuilding. I do get some fun work occasionally, like plenty of Jeep work from local groups and the occasional Ls swap and such. Overall I very much enjoy it. The only problem is after working on other people’s stuff all day, the motivation to get your own stuff done is lacking!

I'm a stores controller for an aerospace company that does work on Canadian and foreign military aircraft, mostly the CH-149 Cormorant and CP-140 Aurora. If anyone is wondering or cares, the fleet of 9 VH-71 Kestrel helicopters are in my hangar getting stripped down now.

Background- Farmer for 12 years prior to heading to college.

Mechanical Engineer- designed offshore cranes, mooring systems and pipelay equipment for Oil, gas and construction industries.

Engineering Manager for a company that made and sold metal cutting bandsaws, from simple to CNC versions.

Now - Director for an engineering services company with an emphasis on machine guarding, I know we are currently working with some of the companies already mentioned in this thread. ;)

I'm in the engineering department for an orthopedic medical device company. I pursued my mechanical engineering degree with the intent of getting into a car company but ended up here on assignment from a consulting group and have been very happy with the company. I've probably been better off with a car hobby than a car job.

I have a very small (just me right now) IT company providing managed services to small businesses. Sucks the life out of me every day, but it pays better than anything else I am qualified to do, and I am 20 years in, so here I stay.

I'm farmhand/labourer on a bunch of local vineyards but I also work a little with cattle and various livestock. It aint much but it's honest work.

When you ride a desk all day, sometimes you dream about doing your job. Then you look outside and it's -10F and snowing and go back to work on your PC. 🤭

I was raised on a farm, so I know the work involved. And remember the conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow) it had to be done in. It's why I still like to get my hands dirty to regain some balance.

I'm an artist, but more specifically, I'm a jack of all trades.

I grew up in the coal fields of Southern Indiana, where my dad was a miner. That industry was already dying in the '90's, so I saw no future there. Joined the Air Force and stuck missiles on F-15's and worked in the backshop repairing launchers, bomb racks, 20mm gun system, etc. Got out of the service and went to work as an HVAC service tech for about 5 years. Got tired of that and went to work at a big electric motor repair facility...up to 10-15,000 hp. AC motors. Got tired of that and got a job as a deck hand on a river barge, because why the hell not? Did that for a little while, then got my CDL and drove over the road for awhile. By that time I was approaching 30, no wife or kids and decided to throw my chips down on becoming an artist. Back then, we raced dirt bikes, my brother and I, so I painted our helmets. From there, I started a small business doing custom paint. Painted everything from helmets, Harleys, pulling tractors, race cars...whatever anyone wanted.

Then, wife and kids came along, and someone needed to take care of the kids. My wife has a really good job with great benefits, so it only made sense for me to take on the Mr. Mom job. So, after shutting down the custom paint thing, I have turned it into a fine art thing and it incorporates my love of the outdoors and exploring. So, now I carry my oil paints in my backpack and paint all the beautiful things in nature that inspire me.

But, I also still take on odd jobs to supplement the family income and pay for my hobbies (Jeep, bicycles, fly fishing, hiking gear...)

I can't complain.

An electrical engineer for 47 years, most of which was at Bell Laboratories and related spin-offs, but also with a couple of start-ups (both failed). Retired in May of this year. I designed high frequency circuits and systems (radio, satellite, fiber optics, etc.) and have 20 patents to show for it.

I'm a Over Paid Bum...... Medically Retired from the Army-2006 damn bullet hole in the leg ended my career.

14 years active duty & 14 years in the National Guard with the last 3 years activated for Iraq (2003-2006)

Over the Road Truck Driver

Heavy Line Mechanic

Who knows what else? Did a lot of fun stuff in the Army and got to travel a LOT.

I’m a photojournalist. I chase riots, murderers, sports teams, natural disasters, bad politicians, etc., etc.

I’m also “the messenger”, which a lot of people like to figuratively shoot/literally blame for all the world’s woes.

I’ve covered stories for just about every situation short of aliens and the Second Coming.

Currently, Project Manager/Analyst for City of San Diego governing agency. Basically consults mayor, supports LE, and provides analyisis and managment on major city development projects.

Is mind blowingly annoying with the amount of political BS and redtape corruption. (Ever heard of environmental justice? Lol)

Before that... I was a Senior Analyst for a hospital doing business process managment stuff.

Was stressfully boring.

Before that.... contracted to build up a program for SDGE (san diego utilities) that improved Acct. Payables. Made or saved them $125 million in the first year.

Was fun.

Before all that.... went to Quantico for OCS for the USMC. Midway thru.. was stolen by State for some interesting analytical work. Got to do some cool stuff with the JTTF in San Diego.

Left it all and finished a masters in global finance and business. Previous BA in International security and conflict resolution.

I’m a retired heavy equipment operator (36yrs.) Never wanted to be a boss though because I never wanted to support the aspirin Industry.
And kind of a all around fix it guy. Because you have to when you’ve owned VW’s, TLC’s and Jeeps.
Give me a broken toaster or microwave oven or whatever, and I’ll fix it and give it away to someone that needs it. And a pain in the ass to my wife of 28yrs. Now that’s a job.
And I support the Cannibis industry.
