No spare tire?

I've noticed in a lot of photos that Savvy rigs, GenRight rigs, and a lot of others aren't running spare tires.

Why is this? Do they have crews that follow them along that carry a spare for them, or what?

I'm only asking because with all that extra weight of a heavy spare behind the axle (on the tailgate), I'm not sure what overall effect that has on the vehicle in terms of how it performs off-road.

I certainly know that on-road the difference in having a spare and not having one is profound.

Plenty of people wheel without spares. Spares are heavy and hard to mount effectively once you get above 35's or 37's. If you are trailering your rig, there isn't too much of a need for a spare especially when you can leave one at the truck. For most TJ owners that drive their rigs to the trail, a spare is needed. For Genright and Savvy rigs there isn't really a purpose.

While off roading my 98 XJ 4.0L in Moab for many years the weight of a 33x12.5 GY MTR and the leverage it exerted when crawling up steep obstacles; I removed the tire from the swing out tire carrier and moved the tire inside the cargo area above the rear axle to better transfer weight.

Yes, I've seen a lot of folks mount them inside the rear tub, probably for this very reason.

This is what I was going to say, a lot of folks carry them in the tub instead. It also probably pictures better without the tire on the back for some cases.

Yep, and I had forgotten too that if you're trailering it, you can just keep the spare on the trailer.

I just figured with some of the prices they charge that they had a helicopter that came and picked them up so they didn't need a spare?

Most people I know that wheel without a spare carry it on the trailer and just catch a ride back to camp to get it if something goes wrong and they need it.

I'm in the process of moving my spare from my warn swing out to inside the tub. I'm tired of having to open two doors to get in the back.

I've considered moving my spare inside the tub. I would hate the lack of storage that comes from doing that. I need spares, tools, and a cooler. Once you get that spare in the back there isn't a whole lot of room left in a TJ.

That’s the only reason I wouldn’t do it either, I need the storage space.

I'll probably start putting mine in the tub depending on the trip. For example, I get hung up on it on some of the rock crawling trails with the LWB. If I do that, I will build a platform so I can securely store stuff under it and have a cooler behind the seats.

I don't want to walk an hour+ to get cell signal, eventually get in touch with a friend that has time to come get me, wait an hour or three for them to arrive, and on top of all that have to buy them beer later. So I carry a spare. I'm often alone on backroads (but never offroad alone!)

I've never had to use a spare on my jeeps for the past 10+ years. That makes me think I don't ever need one, but I know that's not how that goes.

I want to take the tire carrier & spare off and fab up a sleeve to protect the tire carrier swing out mount/hinge/post. No need for a spare on my work commute & I do think it looks better without one. It would only take two minutes to put it on for trips.

I have never seen a new car without at least a donut to replace a flat tire. Maybe some very high end cars with run flats? The JL has a spare mounted right on the back.
