What brand and weight of oil and filter do you guys recommend?

The truth is that it does not matter what brand you may select. Change it every 5000 miles. In your case I always use a heaver weight oil and a quality filter. Wix or NAPA. they are the same.

I used to use royal purple oil and filter. Then a $3500 motor rebuild later I just use plain old castroil conventional and a mopaR filter per my engine builder. P.S. not blaming the oil for the engine rebuild.

for me its not the "cheeper" it is about contributing to wallyworlds monopoly in the country .. which i personally will not do again

I'm honestly shocked about the Penzoil. How was the "gunk" in the motor - back in the day, we could ALWAYS tell a "Penzoil motor" because of all the gunky slime deposited everywhere. Mayhap things have changed?

Agree about Wix/Napa filters.

That was way back in the 1950s when Pennzoil used a type of wax in their oil. If left in too long it would sludge up the engine. Now Pennzoil is owned by Shell, and is one of the best dino oils from an additive standpoint. I had my lowest iron wear numbers from my XJ's 4.0L with Pennzoil 10w30. Valvoline MaxLife 10w30 is another oil that does well in the 4.0L.

No, it is the previous owner for not changing the oil. Old days were every 3000 miles. New days 5000.

Not the cheaper, I lost all respect for Walmarks when they removed all pistol and 5.56 ammo from their shelves. I can get Orileys to price match, but I don't like doing that either. So I walk in the Walmarks tire center but my oil and filter and leave.

Don't loose too much sleep on oil brand/type. If you don't see colder temps I'd go for a cheap diesel oil like 15w40 and if you do see cold temps then 10w30 is fine. It's not going to make a big difference either way. If you get the classic 4.0 lifter tick switch brands or from synthetic to conventional. I can't stress enough it's not a big deal, let your wallet decide what oil to use and don't worry about switching it up from time to time.

I would not waste my money on Amsoil. My old boss is a dealer for Amsoil, RP and Redline.
I've tried them all. I use Regular 10-30 dino and change it every 3-4k miles.
My prefered brand is Penzoil, have been using it for years.
As for filters, I usually use a Ford FL-1A or Fram PH-8A
