Why is an untastefully modified vehicle worth sticker price 14 years later?

Ok ok ok lol. So is it dumb to pay 17-20k for a tj and drop 20k in mods? Or is it just dumb to pay the total amount upfront as opposed to losing way more money along the way? Just trying to figure this out hahaha.

Thats a very good way of putting it. Im been contemplating a sale on mine but the approach I took was I found a high mileage, 226k, LJR that needed some work. I put a good amount into getting it where it is and am still less than what I think mine could sell for. So throw an LJR like mine in there, other than gears it doesn't need a thing. At what point does mileage vs set up matter? Still a 15+ year old Jeep, things will still need fixing/replacing. Rubber hoses, compressor, fan clutch, plugs, fluids, brakes etc all fatigue with age as well as mileage.

Then you have a fully modified TJ versus having a stock LJR with shitty bumpers. You are comparing apples to oranges. You aren't paying any total amount upfront.

The stock LJR is going to be worth more.

Counting resale is a bit of a cheap way out unless you are intentionally buying the Jeep to sell it again. Without counting modifications, the expected value of buying a Jeep and selling it again down the line is still negative.

I don't think anyone modifying their Jeep expects to get what they put in back out of it. I have 10x the worth of my Jeep in it. For $35k, you can either own this stock LJR or a nice low mileage TJ rubicon on 35's setup nicely. I know what I would choose.

That’s all that matters. We all have opinions. If somebody wants to spend 20k on a 14k dollar value TJ they can do that. Is it a good idea? Well that’s up to the person that owns the Jeep I guess.

I'm not telling you how much I have in my $5k TJ :censored: :ROFLMAO:

Why even bother adding anything up in life? You're going to die one day anyways, aren't you? Where is your money going once your dead?

If you have kids, then there's something to think about, but if not, you'd probably just be better off enjoying life and indulging in a hobby, even if it's an expensive one.

I'm an idiot with my Jeep spending, but at least I already have retirement accounts and education accounts for kids I don't have. I can convince myself that that means I'm responsible enough :ROFLMAO:

My thought is that if you can be responsible, save money, pay bills, and never be late on your payments, then there's no reason not to have a hobby.

Of course you have to pick and choose. I've found that too many of the things I enjoy are very expensive things, so I had to narrow it down to just a few (in this case it's Jeeps and guitars / banjos). My wife thinks we should get a boat, a Polaris RZR, wave runners, etc. I told her she's out of her damn mind, the Jeep hobby as it is is expensive enough!

I like saving a lot because I'm so young. That $1000 I spend on my Jeep is ~$7600 in 30 years time assuming a pretty moderate investment portfolio. That will be useful when I need to fund a new house or college for my kids. I'm also not opposed to spending a bit as well. Have to have a little fun in life.

I like to think I’ve spent more than anyone on my Jeeps, but I think that title may actually belong to @toximus 😉

I keep circling back to my original point. Everybody rags on somebody for “overspending” on a mint low mile LJR, but then the people hazing the guys doing this are spending thousands on TJs that are nowhere in the same ballpark as equal value. I guess some people really do have more money than brains
