Trying to decide if changing my shocks to the Rancho rs5000x is going to make a big difference or not. These are what came on my Jeep when I bought it.
Are these Rubicon Express shocks junk?

Those appear to be the Mono tube shocks....
There are many shocks better than those and a few that are worse...
Personally I prefer Bilstein, Rancho and Fox.

Does it ride stiff? If so try 26-28 psi in the tires. If it still rides stiff get different shocks unless you like it that way.
I ran those RE Monotube shocks on my previous TJ and while they had a good highway ride they were absolutely terrible offroad. No control, I had to slow way down on rough desert dirt roads while everyone else ran off ahead of me leaving me in their dust.
Rancho's RS5000X shocks are 100x better. Their offroad control is amazing for their price and they have a great highway ride too.

Can't say I've met anyone that could tell if your shocks are shot looking at a pic like that.
Shocks last longer than you think. I'm still rocking my ProComp MX6s. I don't even think they make those older non-reservoir type MX6 anymore.

RE has some quality stuff and some average "meh" stuff.
There are better value:quality ratio options out there.

Solution: buy Ranchos 5000x for $200 and sell the RE for like $50 on facebook marketplace

Just on the condition I bought the Jeep in I bet the previous owner didn’t buy the quality stuff.
It's sounding like your RE shocks may be their notoriously stiff riding twin-tubes.
I had a similar kidney busting ride in the current Jeep that had some new KYB Monomax shocks. The ride literally started hurting my back on anything but short drives. I swapped them out for the RS5000X shocks based on the high praise in this forum and can tell you they ride as nice as advertised
Rancho's are the best up-grade for the money you can do for the ride quality of a TJ, both on and off road! Nuff Said!
