I have a bit of an obsession with knives.

I used to buy what I thought was cool looking but then when i used them, I found the flaws.

From my kitchen to the EDC.

Now, I have Japanese steel in my kitchen from MAC, I won’t go cheap again there.

My EDC is Kershaw. Oregon made, good prices and they work. We have like 10 Blurs that get used throughout the family. I also have a few autos I enjoy. After o ice fighting training it changed things for me. The devastating fact in the hands of a trained person, a knife is SCARY.

For camping I honestly like the ESEE. They are tough, have good steel and a good background of real use.

Recently I’ve been eyeing some customs. They are not cheap. It’s a hobby I hope to explore more real soon (knife making) but for now, paying $500-700 for a custom isn’t too horrible to think about once you have handled quality steel and a good fit.

Yes think each of my boys will get a custom for graduation. A heirloom.

Randall is a obvious choice but I’m not a fan of his designs. I’d like to work with a more local guy, Oregon, Washington or Idaho. Any ideas? Care to share your love of sharp steel?

I carry a pocket knife wherever I go. I've had a Benchmade 940, a few mini griptillians, a few spyderco delicas, some CRKT knives, a bunch of cheap knives, a milwaukee knife, etc...

My favorite so far has been one of the cheapest. An Ontario Rat 2 (the small version, which I think the link points towards). It has been great and I don't have to worry about it too much. I didn't like the fact that I always had to keep track of the $200+ 940.

If I was going to get a nice fixed blade, I'd get a Green River Forge knife right out of Oregon. He has a number of good videos on youtube about how he makes each individual knife by hand and doesn't mind working with the customer a bit to figure out what they need.

I've never seen one of his knives in person, but from what I can tell Cy Swan over at Green River seems like a standup guy. One day I'll get a knife from him. I liked this video about his process.

I looked into a lot of custom knife makers a few months back before I realized I had no need for a fixed blade knife... (funny how that works huh?). I decided if I was ever going to get a nice knife I'd get a Green Valley.

I really liked this part of his website. Seemed like something Blaine would say if he made knives

"If your knife breaks and you are not a jackass I will replace it for you. Just send me the broken one so I can understand what you did to break it, and I will make a replacement that will take your usage needs into account."

Now I'll stop fanboying over a guy I've never met or talked to

If you ever have taken a knife fighting class or skinned big game, a fixed blade is your only choice.



Love that quote. Break it proper and I’ll build it proper. Love it. That guy is a guy I’d buy beer for and listen to for hours.

I'm a Gerber fanboy, we were issued their multitool and I loved it, especially over the leatherman. Still have a few variations laying about. This one stays in the range bag.

EDC is a mini covert folder, main reason being how low it sits on your pocket.

I've had one for the last 25 years or so, but I've been looking hard at the Kershaw Leek. My friend carries one, and I like how it feels in your hand. The tip is great when doing woodwork. If only it sat lower in my pocket. Decisions, decisions.

Not a knife-fighter by any stretch, but we did received basic training in defense against a knife attack. Like Combatives, the main goal was not get killed. One of your buddies will be along with a gun in a minute.

We did enough training for me to understand that in the right hands a small blade is no joke. I think 21 feet is considered lethal distance for a knife, which some people call extreme. Sounds like a lot until someone takes away that distance in three steps (under 2 seconds) and now you're bleeding. I'll take .45 ACP for the win, Alex...

I always have my Leatherman Charge TTi and my Swiss Army Knife (Super Tinker) on me, and usually also have my Ontario Rat 3 on my hip. I have a good sized collection on MT's, SAK's, folders and fixed blades. My son is getting into it now as well, and I'm thinking about getting him a Benchmade Bushcrafter 162 for Christmas.

I'm a redneck and have carried a pocket knife since I was 5. Times have changed and I'd never make it one day in school with a knife clipped to my pocket nowadays.

I have an ESSE 3 and 5, they are good purpose built knives. My edc is a Spderco Endura.

I got my first pocket knife 60 years ago, at the age of 4. Carried one all through school and no one thought twice about it.
My EDC is a Leatherman Fuse. Handy little bugger.
I also have a penchant for French Opinels. They aren’t perfect, by a long shot, but like a Ural, they are interesting. I bought my first one, a #9, at the Shenandoah Nat’l Park camp store for about five bucks in 1975. Still have it. Second #9 came about ten years ago, for something like $30. The carbon steel blades will take quite an edge, but can dull quickly. For some reason, the carbon steel can also stain. The blades on the #9 knives look like hell.

I recently picked up a #7 with a SS blade. Slightly smaller and in blue.

My EDC is a Gerber Sharkbelly. The steel isn't as hard as other knives I have. However, it's lightweight, can be sharpened with just about anything, the price is easy on the wallet, and made in the U.S.A.

I have two EDCs. A Benchmade Volli and a Spyderco Tenacious. I carry the Syder the most though, it's one of the cheaper ones at like 40 some dollars and I've been really impressed with it. I've had it for probably about a year by now and it's still insanely sharp. I'd say one of the best knives for the money. The Bench is nice to though, just not as easy on the wallet to lose.
