Can you engage 4 LO from a standstill?

.... Is it possible to turn the engine off, place trans in neutral then try and engage 4LO?

I've done it when the engine off and the transmission in neutral and rolling the Jeep by hand. There is no magic or mystery to this. All you are looking for is some slow movement in the drivetrain which allows the mismatched gearing to line up without grinding.

Ive never had an issue going into 4low while stationary 🤷‍♂️
Mine will virtually always go in stationary as well - in fact, that's now my preferred method. However, once in a while it doesn't want to, I just double clutch it and try again. The other way is to slip it into gear while rolling super slow with clutch depressed or transmission in neutral - at the EXACT split second the Jeep stops rolling altogether.

I’ve had our Jeep kick out of 4lo a couple times shifting while stationary. It’s pretty easy to see if it went “all the way” into 4 lo.
I assumed it was just an issue with the wonkey linkage shifter. But I’m glad I found this thread.
I will upgrade to the Savvy Cable at some point

You’re TJ will go 80? :) I coudn’t remember the exact speed.

Mine does fine at 80, but you can almost see the gas gauge dropping. I try to keep it closer to 70.

As far as shifting into 4lo, if it doesn't go in at a stop, I shift into gear and back out immediately and it will go in to 4lo. It is kind of like shifting a manual with out a clutch. Put a little pressure on it and it will fall into gear when it is ready.

Man. I must have some super wonkey steering. Because i am afraid to go any faster than 70. 65 is my highway speed in the slow lane. Otherwise it feels like i could lose control at any second. What should I be looking into?

Sounds like your caster is off. If you have no lift, just get it aligned. If you’ve got a lift, start a new thread so we can get all the details and not derail the OP’s thread.

My automatic Rubicon likes to be stopped and in neutral to go to 4lo, my manual likes to be moving a tad usually.

I'm with @jjvw on shifting out of 4wd at speed... unnoticeable.

On the comment 4lo for not getting stuck vs getting unstuck...to me it's terrain specific. In the east , 4 lo may get you stuck in mud 4hi will carry you through, and 4 high may make you break traction where 4 lo helps you hook up. Shift on the fly alone can be handy for a number of reasons.

I used to think 4 wheel drive of any kind was the answer to most of life's problems...'til I discovered lockers. Holy moly.

It's great you are getting out and playing with it, and learning the nuances...keep doing that 'til it's second nature. When you need it, you want it to be an extension of your mind. Shift on the fly is a great TJ feature and can give you fast traction at speed that can carry you through junk. It really can be important to know when you can shift it in or out most all the time....over time that becomes instinct.

Sometimes stopping one, going to reverse, then back to neutral seems to take pressure off the driveline or sync things up.

Good thread, good questions and good on you for learning your equipment.

Reference note-

Jerry mentioned not synchronized. That's actually a Jewish thing, and we don't want to get too deep into religion and politics.

I have an 05 with a 4” lift and 33’s (that are pretty worn now actually). And I do 75-80 or a little over on the highway toll road here any time I’m on it. It drove like absolute crap, and I followed threads here to fix everything. I can do that speed and hold steady with 1 finger (I don’t drive that way, but I can)

I’d work on fixing it and getting everything right
