I swear we had a thread about this at one point but I cannot find it for the life of me. Now that the Atlas is taking shape I want to discuss two options:
  1. Steer brake handles with dedicated master cylinders: https://www.kartek.com/parts/empi-16-2543-34-bore-dual-angled-handle-steering-brake.html. Benefits are it looks cool and more handles. Downside, Blaine had mentioned previously its difficult to get high braking forces from the handle. It probably would work fine for loose dirt switchbacks that I will mainly use it for not necessarily bound up rock crawling digs. It would make running a factory console / ebrake very difficult. I don't want to give up my cable e-brake.
  2. Ball valves. This is actually the way I'm leaning. Planning to mount them between driver seat and door-sill. Double the cost of the handle operated one due to running one for each brake line. https://genright.com/products/ball-valve-parking-brake.html. I'd plan to run hard line to a T on top of Driver side frame run to two soft lines up to the handles, then 2 softlines back to frame, hard lines to upper control arm, soft lines to 2 L's on the axle. Should be able to reuse my axle side hard lines.
Anyone have pictures for mounting steering brake in cab in a clean manner? I'm not asking you if you think I need steering brakes I want them and that's enough.

Following.... Aren't there electric options, too?

My question is.. With a valve or electric actuator, wouldn't you be locking all 4 brakes before locking individual lines to the rear axle? Ultimately losing any momentum. Also, the axle would need to be open in order to gain full benefit so I'd guess the scenario is planned with front dig in mind, anyways...

There are electric ball valves yes, Blaine had mentioned sometimes the electric valves can get stuck when theres a pressure differential and wont release so i was staying away from them.

I just got off phone with a buddy who actually used to run ball valves as turning brakes then switched to handles and his input was do not use ball valves. He said sure they work as a parking brake but they have no feel at all versus the handles he uses to feel how much braking pressure he needs. I have to trust his guidance so I'm transitioning to baseline plan of levers!

I'm interested as I've never heard of this. As @sierradmax states above, you would need to open diff for this to work correctly? Also in the rear, wouldn't you need to run individual lines to each caliper similar to the front setup?

Yes to both.

A little long, but a good video showing some examples of using rear brakes and/or front wheel drive.
Love that he's doing a really hard trail without having to spin big tires unnecessarily.

Yes and no. His chassis and suspension is designed strictly for that type of crawling.

Wow thanks for posting that what a rad video. Wish more drivers would do the tutorial style. Cool how he uses front dig on every wall then pops into 4. He also calls the fwd turns front burns which I will steal.

I ordered both an agled and a straight handled version to check out. What do you guys think about it this implementation. I guess I would need to bleed it flat then install it vertical like this?

I'm just starting to play with install options. Putting the MC vertical makes it take up not as much console area. In the vertical I would put the body inside the console and punch the handles through.

I really admire your approach but beyond the realm of what I'd be doing... I'm sure you thought of this but independent E-brake control?

Is there enough room between the seat and door?

the problem with installing the MCs vertical is a lot of the force will be going into the pivot bolt and not into actuating the master cylinder. not sure how big of a deal the force will be, I'll have to draw a free-body on this and see. But vertical installation would be super nice i could bring the brake lines up from under the tub.

Not with the door closed there's a little junk basket on the door panel that takes all that room up.
