Questions about having a hard top painted

Found a hard top for $150. Ya. Crazy deal. No cracks. But it needs repainted. Was gonna take it to my local paint shop or diy.

What are they made of? And whats the best paint? Diy and a pro job?

Prep i assume is normal? Scotchbrite oads and dawn?

SMC material. I recently repainted one and used a scotchbrite pad with a lot of elbow grease followed by acetone. Several coats of Krylon fusion paint.

Use SEM. Several members have used it with good results on their top.

I’ve sprayed SEM out of a HF spray gun and it is much more cost effective buying a quart or two instead of multiple cans for a big project like this, and easier. Finish it with a satin clear so it isn’t super glossy and also has UV protection.

Mine is rattle can dessert tan. It's funny we are all on the same page
with scotch brite. I used lacquer thinner for prep.
You can do it ! go for it!

Yeah, a lot of the time. unless we need rain for a week solid then i remove the hardtop,
It hasn't failed me yet !!!

I used Rust-oleum bedliner pro. The pro one comes out non-rubberized and feels closer to sandpaper. I really like the finish and it's still holding up after 2 years.
Just some elbow grease and then spraying. It goes on smooth and then reacts to form the sandpaper finish.

Flat/matt looks pretty good with gloss black body paint! Gives it a contrast.

Oh. I did. I was the first. And offered to go that night. But he insisted on the weekend. Then sold it to someone else 3hrs later. For far more than 150 probably.
